Civil service re-applying question

    Hey there,

    I worked with the civil service 20 years ago as a clerical officer grade 3. Currently applying again for the civil service.

    Would anyone know if this previous cs employment would count to starting in a higher pay bracket?

    applying for co again or for another role?

    if former.....hmmm theoreticall possibly but unlikely.


    if latter its a certain no.

    service might be transferable for pension purposes.

    You can get incremental credit for previous service after you have started the new CO role. It can take a while to process though and depends entirely on the records of your previous employment still being in existence as the HR from that previous department need to fill in the incremental credit form.

    Why wouldn't they have records? Records can be relevant to pension for decades after a person has gone.

    They have no reason to get rid of them but records are often lost or filed incorrectly making it near impossible to find them again. Especially after twenty years, files would be in long term storage so who knows.

    A government department losing personnel files? That would be farcical as well as being a breach of the Data Protection Acts.

    I worked in HR and it definitely happened more than once, long term storage couldn’t locate files or had the wrong records in certain boxes.

    im surprised that someone of yr constant negative diatribes against the public sector isnt greedy for the reinforcement

    ive seen it a good few times in my various roles

    most common cause is mislabelling/misremembering of old files when being sent for storage (typically the names wouldve been as gaeilge which doesnt help many years later when theyre needed for reference)

    anyway this is a derail

    You probably had your superannuation refunded. When you start, I think you are allowed incremental credit for these years, you also should have the option of buying back this service for pension purposes,
