I just had my application for job seeker allowance declined. They asked for my husband gross wages but only deducted PRSI when working out weekly rate payable and not the tax he pays. They then came out with a much higher net amount then we actually get after tax comes off. Is this normal?

The means test is on your partners gross pay less PRSI only.

Okay thanks. Do you know why as obviously our take home pay less after tax? Surely it should be means tested after tax.

There isn’t any particular reason. WFP is means tested on net take home.

Read this and see if you might be eligible for some.

If youre married and your not working outside the home at present, have you distributed your unused tax credits to your husband?
