    Hi Folks

I have a 2007 VW Golf TSI 140 DSG since new. 156k KM and well maintained. No problems to date.

The other day, with it already hot from earlier use, I started the engine and there was a loud squeaking that went away itself after a few minutes. I was in the car again today and noticed a constant grating sound as the engine idles.

I am not a mechanic but am thinking timing chain. I am attaching a link to a video with sound - is the problem obvious to anyone familiar with the car?

    Thanks
    Tom

I'm no mechanic but that sounds like a stretched or rattling timing chain sound to me. Common enough problem on those TSi engines. You would need to get it probably diagnosed but if it is the timing chain then you will need to get it replaced and asap in my opinion before it lets go and damages the engine.

Sounds more like water pump than chain to me.
