Just wondering if anyone else has seen this film yet?
I saw today and thought it was excellent, a fairly simple story but so we'll acted.
Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, lucas hedges and Joel Edgerton are main cast. I thought hedges in particular was very good.

    Summary
Jared Eamons, the son of a small-town Baptist pastor, must overcome the fallout after being outed as gay to his parents. His father and mother struggle to reconcile their love for their son with their beliefs. Fearing a loss of family, friends and community, Jared is pressured into attending a conversion therapy program. While there, Jared comes into conflict with its leader and begins his journey to finding his own voice and accepting his true self.

Watched it a few weeks back. Very, very good with a brilliant cast. Lucas Hedges career at 22 is scarily good, will be surprised if he doesn't win an Oscar before he turns 30.

It never ceases to amaze and appal me how much power American parents have over legal adults in their family circles.

It took enormous courage for the protagonist to escape the clutches of these religious fanatics who caused the death by suicide of a fellow inmate of his in this evil institution at the hands of these vile people.

We in Ireland may have suffered at the hands of religious fanatics in the past but the suffering continues in the so-called bible belt of the deep south of the US where spurious doctrines, practices and beliefs are still propagated to enforce poverty and ignorance. Bad and all as the Catholic Church was and in some cases still is, it pales into insignificance beside the goings on and sharp practices carried out with minimum supervision or oversight by many so called churches in this region.

In some of these churches autistic children are force fed caustic substances and bleach in the mistaken non scientific belief that worms are the cause of autism. The real truth is that there is no known material cause of autism in the sense of it being a pathology caused by a bacterium, a virus or a parasite. Some experts attribute it to genetic or inherited factors.

A similar vein of reasoning allows creationism and flat earth beliefs and pre-Galilean models of the universe to be believed in in spite of all the evidence to the contrary.

Other preachers boast about being able to raise the cost of a private jet in a matter of days by soliciting donations from hapless devotees on privately funded TV stations. There appears to be no laws in the US against this blatant chicanery, all in the interests of freedom of expression and freedom of religion.

It is heartbreaking to learn that similar bogus "cures" and "solutions" are offered to members of the gay community. Like the gay community people with autism were seen as sinful, evil or in a state of demonic possession and many bogus attempts were made throughout history to exorcise evil spirits from these hapless people.Established religion did little or nothing to try and understand or accommodate people with differing attributes to the so-called mainstream and any departure from the accepted norms was persecuted and shunned often to the point of severe injury or death.

I hope that the author of these memoirs and the originator of this movie script has a long and happy life in spite of his past family trauma.
