Old VAG engine into newer car

Just wondering if anyone knows, would an older skoda (VAG) engine, its a 1.9Tdi ASV 110bhp version fit in an newer car of the VAG family (mk2 Octavia, Audi A4 or maybe VW), from what I can tell these engines didn't come in cars after 2004, so not sure if it was in Mk2 Octavia's ever? as Mk1s were available up till 09 I believe.
I know there are differences that Ive seen between the Mk1 and Mk2 eg (brakes) so maybe there are differences around the engine fitting. Will it just fit cars it originally came in? (Octavias mk1, GolfIV and some Seats, I believe) Im thinking in regard to space to fit/engine mounts and connections to subframe/driveshafts and other components that may be in the way.

Basically the car is an 01 skoda, the engine only has 130k miles on it, unless this is some sort of calm before the storm the engine has never seemed to be better, it actually seems to have improved. I may get one more (or at best 2) NCTs out of the car. Another 20k miles and it would then be due a timing belt, Id consider getting the lot done in one go, the car body is good in some ways, but I can see that the NCT may try pull it up on some things as they have tried in the past.

I was thinking if I could get a newer car with a better overall condition body, (but possibly had a high mileage engine or needed an engine replacement) that this might be possible, from what Ive read the ASV is an extremely reliable engine, better probably than most that came after it, its never failed emissions or smoke and on paper the emissions are 140g/km which seems a lot lower or very similar to other cars currently on the road.

will it fit? has it been done? are there other issues regarding changing an engine (edit ie, would fitting it into a car that originally had a petrol engine cause problems regarding incorrect wiring?), like will it have to comply to the engine year (2001) emissions, or for the year of the car body it was changed into? eg maybe a car from 09? and would that mean it could potentially fail on that basis?
I would put it onto a newer year Mk1 Skoda Octavia but I haven't seen clean ones around, Id consider the possibility of doing up an old Mk1 but Ive just nowhere to do that.

First of all will the older fit,yes it will.
    Wiring may be different .
I can't see why you would bother as you can buy the mk2 Octavia quiet cheap and maybe sell your own engine as they are used in old transporter van engine conversion jobs.
If you could find a mk2 Octavia or same with say the timing belt
Broken ,then it may be worth it.

I thought it might be a lot of hassle alright unless I was getting a newer car cheap that needed a replacement engine for that reason (timing belt broke), or preferably just very high mileage so it could move under its own power initially. Id preferred it might fit into a newer A4, but I dont think that engine was ever in the A4. Selling the engine may be the handier option.

I can never see these projects making any sense beyond wanting a project car. I would imagine getting the engine into the bay would be the easy bit, getting the ECU and other electrics to work sounds like a massive pain.

But, some people enjoy that kind of pain :pac:

Yes, it might be nice if I had the time to potter away at something like that and somewhere to do it, a project car (mk1 Octavia, golf4 or even a Seat) might have been a nice idea, potentially be an easier straight swap, I suppose the whole or a substantial part of the wiring could be transplanted from an old car to a newer one, but that could throw up its own problems, like would wiring/ECU match up easily regarding connecting to stuff like speedometers and other information.
Think I might can the idea and drive the car on as long as it passes the NCT and sell the engine later on a with a free car attached.

That 1.9 is a great engine.
