French 1.6 diesel saloons

Hi all, new to car-buying and may need to pick up something for a new job in the next few weeks. Ideally I'd be looking for diesel (for mileage due to work), 1.6 (tax + insurance costs), and saloon/estate for transporting goods.

Looking at '08 and newer, everything on Donedeal on the lower priced end seems to be Peugeot 407s, Citroen's, Renault's etc.

Having driven Renault's before, I'm not too keen on them. My question is, are the French boats worth a punt? Would many have been ex taxis/fleet cars/ex business? How are mechanicals/reliability etc?

Like I said, new to whole process so just looking to be pointed in the right direction. Any alternative marquee suggestions welcome, would be partial to a Mondeo but these seem to be pricier at first glance

407 was a bit of a dog. C5 from 2010 was a strong motor I believe. Always liked the 308, which is a hatch

2.0 engine is much better than the 1.6 hdi
It's a PSA engine and they are in everything from Citroen to Volvos but are prone to issues.
