Drunk friend damaged my car.

Hi. I gave my very drunk from friend a lift home from the pub (I was sober). My friend violently tried to get into the back of the car and now the door won't open. The garage says it could cost anywhere upto a grand to fix. My brother was also in the car.

Problem now is I said to my friend that he damaged the car door ( he remembers nothing ) and his only reply was "I'm sceptical it was me"

    What can I do?

A grand? Did he try to get in with a digger??
Best thing to do would be to get a second opinion on the price, then approach him with yer brother and explain that if he won't pay now, he'll pay through court.

Yeah we got a mechanic to look at it. He pure swang on the door handle and now it's not latching and can't be opened from the inside or outside

Unless you tried hauling drunkie in a Bugatti, I'd say the mechanic is chancing his arm, too.. Chances are, some link has broken between the door handle and the door lock unit. It's usually a rod or a small bowden cable.

Weird that it's broken between the lock unit and the interior handle too so I'd be wondering if there was a manual child lock and it was somehow engaged, which would explain the lack of opening from the inside, leaving just the outside.

At any rate, there are lock specialists that will get your door open for a look easily enough without damaging it. Then they can examine the damage done.

Keep records of everything and in the event he refuses to cough up, you'll left with little choice but to use them when you go legal.
I'd consider that route though. Ye won't be freinds after it. Ever. So consider whether or not you're alright with that. Personally, I'd get it fixed and cut him out completely.

Disown friend and put it down to experience, not worth hassle for a grand.

A grand is a lot of money though. At that you're just a pushover. Get a second opinion OP, get a quote in paper and go back to him. He broke it, he fixes it.

Sometimes a grand to get a freeloader out of your life forever is a bargain.

I'd say if they go to court and sue, the freeloader will be out of their life anyway, but they might get money from him first.

I know that well. My cut off would be 200. A grand no chance- he's paying it.

Legal fees at circa €200 plus an hour will quickly clear the grand, then what actual concrete proof is there the friend did it?

Some of those door locks require dismantling most of the door to get at them.

No advice to offer - just wanted to say that I enjoyed your description of how your friend "pure swang" the door. That phrase has made my day. :)
