A friend just gave me his car as a gift but he couldn't find the Vehicle Certificate. We got a replacement form and about €12 is required. But we are not sure if he has to fill in his details or my details, who's details will come with new one?

its registered to your friend. fill in his details as its him the car belongs to at the moment, when the log book arrives then sign it over to you

Current registered owner fills in the replacement form and goes to the motor tax office with it. When they are posted out a replacement vehicle certificate they and you can fill out the change of ownership section on the back and post it off. You will then receive a new vehicle certificate in your name in the post. That officiates the car is then in your name.

Alternatively there is a different form that you bring to a solicitor that can change the car to your name without the 'book

To my knowledge doesn't that still requires Shannon to write to the current owner asking them if they are no longer the registered owner of the car before they will transfer ownership?

If so then it will probably be quicker to do it the way I earlier outlined.
