it depends on your field and what level you work at.

I got my current role via LinkedIn it wasn't advertised anywhere else.

There seem to be plenty jobs on it in my industry (engineering) and I have found recruiters can be fairly busy in making contact and asking if you are interested in a role.

In some (many) cases though, I strongly suspect that they are doing this purely to meet a quota for a number of CV's they want to offer their client as they have then spoken to me and it has been clear they did not read my profile.

Make sure your settings are set up so that you will appear in searches if someone is looking for a new hire with your skill set and that you will be informed of jobs which have been placed on the site.

It's not just the jobs that are advertised there, it's also used by in-house recruiters and agencies to identify candidates (for a role that they might not even list there).

There are currently 30k jobs advertised on LinkedIn in Ireland at the moment. I would say that's quite a lot.

I’d say it’s the best way to find a job in Engineering/Technology. I’m regularly contacted on their by companies/ recruiters for jobs they haven’t advertised yet. I’m not sure about other industries, but I don’t see why it would be any different.

It does depend on the industry. If you're in any STEM field, it's basically a must. If you're a hairdresser or a plumber then it's probably of little use to you, most job offers coming through friends or old colleagues.

There are several ways to "game" LinkedIn in order to shake the tree and get contact from recruiters. You'll never get a straight job offer (of course not), but as mentioned above it can lead to direct contact from companies who aren't advertising the job and are looking for someone very specific.

It's also a very useful research tool - looking up the details of a company, where they are, what they do, what other jobs are open. And you can see if there's any former colleagues working there.

I've genuinely forgotten how to job hunt the "old" way, every job I've got in the last decade has come from recruiters hitting me through LinkedIn, rather than me firing out CVs to job ads.

As other have said it really depends on the field you are working in. I work in IT so it's a must to have a good LinkedIn profile. I have gotten job interviews in the past through LinkedIn and a couple of jobs.

The key to LinkedIn is networking with people in your industry. That doesn't mean you spam and try and link with everyone. Imho you should only link with people you know, either those you have met or at least talked to.
