Can someone tell me what % of males you can expect in female sexed semen.
Used 5 straws had 3 repeats and two pregnancies the first of which was a bull born today.

Muster ai had a thing called "female advantage" . It was was an advantage because you were sure of having bulls. Surely things have improved by now

    90% female.
I had 100% female out of 1 cow. Price is prohibitive.

Don't know the exact figures but I'd imagine the percentages of heifers is much higher now

You can get two standards of sexed semen, iirc. 90% should result in 90% heifers and 10% males (or vise versa) and 75% should result in 75% female to 25% male (or vise versa).

repeats are the big issue. the semen is washed to take out male genetics, however this means tge semen is weak in nature. most lads have given up on it as present. 4-5 years ago most taught it would be sorted by now but it is still poor quality. An Irish Independent regular farmer writer got the sack over commenting on it

Big variability in batches. Used it one year wasn't happy with conception, in a group I had regularly being getting good rates with. One lad in group who is very consistent with stock used it with good results one and very poor results the next in terms of conception

How are people getting on with the trial from last spring from icbf on sexed semen? Calves being born here from it now. I havent studied it yet but I think I have more heifers than bulls from it so far

    That was a different process

It has improved a lot. The big thing is there is only 5million sperm in a straw of sexed vs 12-20million in a conventional straw but condemnation rates are 90%+ of what conventional straws are achieving. The big thing is you need to be more careful with thawing and handling straws. Because you have less sperm to start with you can’t afford to be losing them to cold shock.

I've never used it but what ive heard is that farmers who are getting very good conception rates and results from conventional Ai get good results from sexed semen but those who arent getting great results from normal Ai dont do well with sexed.
