The letter you got from Longford telling you that you were awarded specified the date you will come into payment.
The arrears will be paid to you anything up to 6 weeks later depending on what payment if any you were getting while your DA application was being processed.

A family member was awarded DA following appeal on Jan 2, and they still waiting to hear from the Longford section on when first payment will kick in! As for arrears I've heard that can take months.

Technically your family member wasn’t “awarded DA”.
The appeal they submitted was “allowed”.
This means that the original application was refused at the medical check stage. The appeals process then started, successfully for your family member, and the application has been returned to Longford to continue being processed.
    She/he should hear soon though.

How do you know you were awarded DA?

It said on letter that is was 'allowed ' after an appeal. So I assumed I was awarded ?

No. That letter came from the Appeals office and says that your appeal is successful. That means that your application has been returned to Longord and they will resume processing it,
It may be some weeks before you are awarded DA. Your application was suspended at the medical check section but the means test still has to be done.
How long will depend on if you had another payment while you were waiting.

My appeal acceptance letter came in the post on 2nd January. Still no payment or letter from social welfare. My friend received his appeal acceptance early December and also has not received anything from SW. I called and they said they’re currently working on December appeals.
