    Hello Boardsies!

    I am finally deciding to part ways with my 05 Astra that I've had for 11 years!

    I am looking at a Focus/Hyundai i30 or ..... a total upgrade with a BMW 1 series.

    I am considering buying in the north as generally their cars seem to have better spec.

    My maximum to spend would be €18,000

    Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?

    I don't think I do enough mileage for diesel, which the BMW seems to come in. I like a hatchback kind of style, and 5 doors. Also looking for something between 1.4 - 1.6L size.

    Look in the UK too.

    Be careful of northern cars and rust.

    Lots of road salt used so cars can be destroyed.

    If I bought in the UK (not NI) how do I get it?

    Salt .... hmmm.... I wouldn't have a clue. My Dad is in the wesht so not a chance he would come with me to look. I'd basically be looking to buy from a reputable garage & hope for the best!

    The same process as buying from the North except travel would involve flights and ferry.

    There is a huge sticky thread at the top of this forum around buying a used car in the UK.

    Ah right.... yeah I'm in Louth/Meath so close enough to travel up north so not interested travelling to the UK for a car TBH
