Dell G5 15 5587 Screen Replacement.

I'm looking at replacing the original 60hz FHD panel on my Dell G5 15 5587, with a compatible N156HHE-GA1, 120hz display.

It would seem however, that these particular displays are TN, which, from what I have been able to gather, are deemed inferior to IPS displays?

So my question is, are there any displays, such as the N156HHE-GA1, which are compatible with the Dell G5 15 5587, but have an IPS displays instead of TN? If such displays exist, are they significantly better than their TN counterparts and if so, where can I purchase one? :)

    Cheers

that's a very specific question - probably best going to some dell enthusiast forum.

also the value of a high refresh screen is debatable unless you have a graphics card like and nvidia 1070 or above as you would not be running games at high fps (over 60fps) at 1080p unless they are games that are easy on the graphics card or running them at low settings.

    Thanks glasso.

The Laptop has a GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU, so perhaps the benefit of a 120Hz panel would be rather negligible?

Though I recently installed some hyper x impact ram, which does seem to have had a bit of a positive impact, as it apparently overclocks everything automatically, to maximise performance.

Anyway, I don't really know what I'm talking about :)

well the max-q is 10 to 15% less than the desktop 1060 card in reality due to less power being sent to it.

but if the panel offers more brigthness and colour quality it may be worth considering if you are really unhappy with your current screen.

but it terms of fps - if you're running recent games at 1080p high settings you're unlikely to be going much over the 60hz limit of your current screen. maybe if you were playing at 1080p low or maybe medium settings or on older or non-intensive games yes. (e.g. games like fifa)

so unless there are big benefits on the colour accuracy and brightness I'm not sure it's worth the hassle

you might find somebody who did it on reddit or some gaming hardware forum

google "Dell G5 15 5587 Screen Replacement" basically

e.g. this from reddit came up which mentions that panel you are aware of

So, I went ahead and bought the 120hz panel for ****s and giggles and received it today. I've installed it without any issues and everything seems to be working as expected, including the dimming buttons, so I'm happy enough.

I have one question though, which is likely related to what was mentioned in glasso's last post. I understand I might not have noticed any significant improvement while running certain games, but after installing the panel, I ran Assassin's Creed Odyssey, as I was curious if there would be any noticeable difference and if I'm being entirely honest, it seemed as if the performance had actually decreased. Frame rates would sometimes spike up into the 100's or 80's but would generally sit around the mid 60's, with frequent stuttering when moving.

On the old 60hz panel, FPS would sit steadily in the mid 60's and the movement was pretty much always nice and smooth.

Is this to be expected? is there something that I should be doing that I'm not aware of?

you could limit the framerate to a capped rate to make it smoother

    using rivatuner

in rivatuner you can cap the fps

e.g. set it to a rate that it can maintain and it should look smooth then

    worth trying anyways.

Extremely helpful once again, thank you.

I've since tried the game and it seems to have settled, but I've downloaded Irivatuner anyway, as I'll no doubt require it at some point.

    Appreciate it

    Steve
