Deposit on a car (in the UK)

Early last week I put a £500 deposit on a 2013 car in the Uk, which was through a Northern based franchise dealer.

I then got an RAC check done, which came back with about 4 issues with the car. I asked the dealer that if these could be resolved before I come to see the car on Saturday. He said OK to 3 issues but didn't agree to fix one issue, which was a new tyre (thread depth was 3mm).

Later in the week I ended up finding a 2010 version of the same car in a different part of England, mid West.

So I went out with the intention to view both cars today (Saturday), and viewed the 2010 model first.

I was impressed with the 2010 model and purchased there and then.

It ran later that anticipated and by the time we got paperwork sorted the daylight was gone. So I then rang the Northern franchise dealer to say I wasn't coming to view his car up North - and can I have my deposit back...

He said he won't release the deposit until I have viewed the car.

My options are travel back to the North of England to view the car. Or open up a dispute with the credit card company through which the deposit was paid.

What is the best way to approach this?

Unless you agreed the deposit was refundable you can probably say goodbye to it.

    Verbal, or in text/email?

    On the phone. So verbal.

Also, the dealers website doesn't state anything about the matter of deposits.

Ask again, perhaps comments on their Facebook page wanting the deposit returned might speed up the process.
