I went to the factory today with 2 freisan bullocks, 23 months old.
They killed out at a fat score of 2=, what are the implications of this as regards the grid?
How much below the base price will they be?
I've another 14 to go but I'll wait for another three weeks before going to allow them go up a fat score or two.

I go to 2 factories one would have bbe back €1 from base on p and probably not much different on ó=.

Other would probably pull 30 on ó and 48 on p.
Would probably be more now that there is over supply

I know both would issue me a yellow card for brining a 2= and i would need to explain why (hurt mad or something)

Id be feeding on the rest for a fair while if i were you. Would you consider going to grass

I had tour of boning hall once and i could see the problem with p grades put the 2= on top its not a pretty picture

Have you an agent acting for you? If you have you should get him to fight on your behalf.
I would start horsing feed into the rest of them.
Get someone to show you how to read fat score on live cattle its not that hard.
    Why did you send them?

I'm not been critical btw everyone makes a mistake.

Generally with these cattle I be docked 24C off the base on the 0= and 42c/Kg off the base for the P+ provided they were in a bunch of cattle that the rest killed ok fat score wise. However if they were the best two of the bunch I be with epfff and be looking at grassing them. I have not bought ration this year but it must be up near 300/ton. Feeding cattle that are only going to average maybe 3.40-3.55/kg over the bunch is throwing good money after bad. Some of those cattle could be 6-8 weeks away from slaughter. I imagine they are more than likely killing sub 300kgs If you can get them to grass they would be fair cattle in June. You would want a great Friesian to start feeding him for the winter. As well if they have being fed a high rate of ration for 80-90 days already they will go stale in a few weeks time.

It all depends on what feed they got up till now. If 2= is a representative of the general run of the rest it won't take much to get them up to 3. Fat 3= is all you need on these cattle given age and weight. It doesn't pay to push frs to a 4 given feed conversation ability. If all is right it doesn't take that much on a final push. However as you said meal is not cheap but neither is silage.

Fr will take their time, they'll grow upwards rather than fatten at that age. Wasted food on a few myself. Beef crosses finished and gone to the butcher. The FRs will go to grass, I'll see what there like in July.
You could put saddles on them ATM and ride them in a point to point.

I finish around 30 of them at this age the last few years. I buy them at 3 weeks old and keep reseeded grass in front of them. Always get them into 280kgs plus, 2+'s onwards and grade reasonably ok- 60% get into O= or better territory.
I band them at calves and a few grade very well, they are bullish.
The fat score this year was depressed due to the summer and also I was feeding them straw to stretch out my silage.

That's my thinking- i'll send on 2 more next week to see how hey are going and send the whole lot of them in three to four weeks time.
    They won't see grass again.
