Screen cover. Is it only for accidental damage?

Sons rear door window was smashed in where he had it parked overnight. Nothing taken from car just the window glass completely smashed in.
Reported it to Gardai and they suggested that it may be covered if he has windscreen cover, which he has. His policy says it covers side windows as well as front with an excess of €25.
Anyone know if this type of damage to window would be covered under windscreen cover or is it only accidental damage.
Could ring the broker but is shy to this in case it isn't covered and they might hold this incident against him when he goes to renew next time. Even if he pays for it himself

Who is he insured with? I've looked at several policy documents and none of them mention 'side' windows, just 'windscreen and windows'.

Normal glass cover will pay for a new rear window. And the fact that it was an attempted theft shouldn't matter. Most glass installers will do it after getting the OK from your insurance i.e. they get paid direct so you don't have to pay them and claim off the insurance. Tell him to bring his insurance cert. with him and go to any auto glass installer. Maybe phone ahead to make sure they have the part in stock.

    Cheers for reply.
He's insured with Liberty. Don't think it was attempted break in as nothing was taken. Thinks it was either someone just being a gurrier or something reversing back into the window with a long load on back of it

Liberty Policy document Section 3 'Windscreeen Cover'. Relevant text emboldened by me......

This section only applies if it is shown in the schedule.

We will pay the cost of repairing or the cost (less the excess) of replacing damaged or broken glass in the windscreen or windows of the vehicle, as long as there has not been any other loss or damage.

    No mention of 'side windows'.

A rear window is going to be expensive and some insurance companies cap the benefit if you do not use one of their 'preferred' suppliers so tell your son to phone Liberty and ask them to nominate a supplier in his area.

Might be some confusion here. Its not rear window. It's the door window at rear side of the car.
Had a read of the booklet and it states

We will pay the cost of repairing or the cost less the excess of replacing damaged or broken glass in the windscreen or Windows of the vehicle, as long as there has not been any other loss of damage.
We will not pay for damaged or broken glass in sunroofs, glass roofs or panoramic sunroofs.

Looks like he is covered. He rang autoglass which was the number on policy and they said they be out tomorrow to replace. Hopefully this does not effect his no claims now.
Might get him to ring liberty or broker direct to check

    Interesting.

A pal of mine had motor insurance with one of the bigger UK outfits. They excluded claims under the windscreen cover if the damage was caused during a theft / attempted theft.

Apologies, I misread your original post, only notice the 'rear' part and assumed it was the rear window.

Tell him not to bother, it says in the Liberty policy document (Section 3 Windscreen cover)...

Claims under this section will not affect your no-claims bonus.

Technically he is required to declare it as a claim (which it is) when seeking a quote from other companies but the general rule in the business is that it will be disregarded.
