    Hi

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a home charger installer in Co Galway. I had one lined up but he's let me down.

    Thanks

Nigel Daly installs them nationwide. He has more installs done than all other installers together. He is expensive, but reliable and does a good job. For a bargain, look elsewhere :p

Any reason to avoid ESB by the way? They seem to be on the affordable side with a post-grant cost of €149, and since I'm dealing with them already for the supply, I might use the opportunity to look into smart meters. Two birds, one stone, etc.

Didn't know the ESB would actually do the install.
Surely that's the way to go alright

    Cheers guys

Technically it's Electric Ireland, the supply branch. And don't take my word for it as I'm in the same boat as you: will get a home charger soon and wondering if there's anything I should know before going down that road. Just found their offer compelling price-wise, in addition to the work being done by the same crowd that supplies the power.

It's possible they have updated since but as far as I know the €149 install from electric irealnd will only get you a 16A charger rather a 32A.

Mulhare Electrical Services were recommended by Nissan here.

Pretty decent deal from a big name (thus reliable?) installer, and the ABL unit is German built and very reliable. But as pointed out, the charger is set to 16A, so charges at 3.6kW max. Fine if you have an old model Leaf or eGolf, BMWi3 or Hyundai Ioniq, but not future proof to work with cars with bigger batteries as there is only 9 hours of night rate charging per day. That wouldn't even half charge an EV with a 64kWh battery...

You can upgrade these ABL chargers to 32A though, provided the installers used thicker cable than the minimum requirement, I have done mine myself. RECI electrician will have to connect it up to the consumer unit and fit a new RCBO
