    also have 5 cows-currently getting hay(another month at least) pre-calver lick with them also..
    are outside also... doing well at mo!
    was go to feed them oats/barley combination also.. Uncle told me I was mad, waste monies!
    as doing grand-plenty flesh on them!

    now these are all PB angus stock

    Good silage and minerals would be more than ample l would have thought. It all really depends on the quality of your silage and what bcs your cows are in.
    Minerals are very important for both the cow and the calf precalving.

    Ours is too. Id throw in a few forks to them sometimes and think they have too much and fork some out again! They only have concrete to lick at the majority of the time

    I wouldn’t feed barley pre calving. If it’s hay only or heifers I’d recommend soya on its own, it’s a serious job to bring on milk without getting the calf fat. Newborns always seem to have a good kick to them with soya.

    Not a fan tbh. Have seen scour caused by feeding diet of soya on its own.

    I’d only feed less than a half kilo pre calving. Cows or heifers on hay alone definitely need it. Colostrum is supposed to be way better with it .

    My Teagasc adviser was directing me to feed soya precalving too to aid colostrum.
    I am reluctant to feed as I see it as extra work and cost, has there been and trials done on colostrum after soya addition.:confused:

    re barley/oats -between 2 incalfs +maiden! getting about 5-6kg's only between them just

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,275 ✭✭✭orm0nd

    sucklers as a rule have better quality colostrum than dairy stock

    i would leave out the barley and feed a little of a 6:1 mix of oats and soya

    I always think of Soya as a very high protein source. 48% Crude Protein according to this;
