Can't get my deposit back, tradesman

A few months ago I decided to install fitted furniture in my house. I am fairly new to the area and didn't know of any companies to try so I looked online. There was a guy advertising himself on Facebook marketplace, and talked the talk. He came out, took measurements and showed me a portfolio of previous jobs and timber samples. He gave me a quote, which I was delighted with. So I decided to go with him. He asked for a deposit of 800 euros to buy materials with, which isn't unheardof. I transferred the money to his bank account through the bank. He gave me a receipt, and promised the first units would be delivered in 3 weeks. On the receipt was his name, and more importantly his Vat no. Then came the excuses. One of his men was sick. One of the suppliers never delivered the materials.
He had emailed me the quote so I started contacting him only by email to provide a paper trail as I had gotten a bad feeling once he kept putting off the delivery time.I emailed him constantly asking for updates but got only excuses. Eventually after bout 10 weeks since giving him my deposit I emailed him and gave him an ultimatum to deliver the units within a week. He emailed me back saying that he wouldn't be able to do the job, that he had too much work going on. I was angry to say the least, but he apologized and asked me to send me my bank details and he would return my full deposit to me. The days went by and no sign of my deposit. I kept asking him for it back, and once again I only got excuses. To this day, 3 months after having the misfortune of encountering this cowboy, this scumbag, I have not received a penny of my deposit back. Not alone did he waste my time, he stole my money as well! Looking back I was silly and naive to trust someone I really knew nothing about. He seemed legitimate and I have a feeling Im not the first victim. I have proof of the money transfer, the conversations we had were all through email, and I was able to find his name and address from the vat no.

I submitted a case against him to the small claims court and they said that I have a case. I have paid my fee to them and to my knowledge have contacted him to return my money. What I would like to know from the members of boards.ie is:

Have any of you used the small claims system before?
Is there any other avenue I could pursue this scumbag to get myoney back?
As it was a bank transfer, can the bank help me out?
What kind of timeline can I expect to a resolution with the small claims?

I have learned a lot from this episode of my life. I was foolish to think that most people are honest and like to see the good before the bad. I will do whatever it takes, for however long to get my deposit back and stop this scumbag doing this to someone else again!
