    Hi,
I was in a well know joinery today to enquire about sliding doors and I feel like I was railroaded into the aluclad and aluminium type. Any time I asked about uPVC we were told, "oh you don't want that of course" then shown another aluclad door.

I've been looking into them and I can't see much wrong with uPVC. Can anyone tell me why we shouldn't go for uPVC?

I hope people who know more will comment and eleborate but I think aluclad lasts longer and looks a lot better. The best doors are aluclad so you have a better chance of avoid some of the cheap junk that is sold too with poor iron mongery and weak airseals.

uPVC slider will be smaller in size in comparison to aluclad or aluminum. I went with aluminum.

@BryanF are you referring to the "depth" of the door or the width of the frames?

AFAIK all PVC sliders have exposed track on the outside.

    This is worse.

No size of slider: height x length

What is the size, how many panels, and how many panels do you want to slide?

We need a 3 metre wide by 2.3 metre high slider. Just the two panels - one sliding

The exposed track is not something I'd considered...

I've 3.4m wide slider, triple glazed. (half of the 3.4m slides other half fixed). Its in about a year - no issues so far :/

You will find several firms that can supply uPVC that will fit. Some like Internorm are quality products that look really well, at the other end of the scale you have poorly designed and manufactured products. You will be living with it for a long time so I would talk to at least 5 suppliers before choosing.

Google uPVC vs Aluclad, you will find some useful info, including this article in the Irish Times. Its about windows, but the general points on uPVC vs aluclad apply to patio doors also.
