Hi everyone. Really hoping someone can give me some advice. I've worked all my life until recently quitting my job in Nov 2018 with the hope of finding something better. Shortly after I found out i was pregnant and have been job hunting since with no avail. Trying to find out if i will be entitlement to any maternity benefit. I'm currently on job seekers benefit and someone told me today unless I can get some type of paid employment part time or other for 16 consecutive weeks before the due date I will be entitled to nothing. Apparently even if i can one day a week for 16 weeks this would suffice? Can anyone shed any light on this? Really worried! Thanks a million.

You need to be in paid employment in the 25th week of your pregnancy earning at least €38 per week and your employer paying a PRSI contribution on your behalf. Yes one day a week will do as long as the employer is paying the contribution.

Hi Splinter65 thanks for your reply. Do you know if me being on job seekers benefit at the moment will effect me claiming maternity benefit if i am lucky to gain employment?

Being on Jobseekers Benefit will not affect a maternity benefit application.

If you are approved for maternity benefit you can stay on jobseekers until maternity kicks in.

Just to clarify, you do not need 16 weeks work. You only need one PRSI contribution but as splinter said it must be after week 24 of pregnancy.
