recording to HDD and watching another channel

    Hi.
    This falls somewhere between terrestrial and satellite and normal technical so I wasn't sure which forum to post this on so forgive me if this is not the correct forum:

    I have a Sony KD55XE8396 Smart TV.

    It has a standard TV cable connection which I use for digital channels (e.g RTE). It also has a single cable connection to which I have connected to one of my old Sky cables (there are two - I canceled Sky a while ago) and I can get the non encrypted satellite channels.

    I can record on to HDD from both digital and satellite. However when recording on either if I want to switch to the other I get an on-screen message saying that the feature is not supported. I thought these were two separate tuners and I could record on one while watching the other.

    Any help/advise would be much appreciated

    Majority of TVs do not offer separate recording/watching. Unless it is specifically advertised you should assume it is not possible.

    The best option is likely to be getting a separate tuner box.

    Same with the Samsung I have - when recording sat you can't switch to terrestrial. It has twin sat tuners, so flicking to another sat channel is fine.

    Thanks for the responses.

    JDxtra:
    Thanks. When you say twin sat tuners do you mean two satellite connectors on the TV itself? Unfortunately I the Sony only has one.

    Vic::
    Thanks: Regarding the separate tuner box. Do you mean something like a freesat box or is the "tuner box" something else. If the latter, how does it connect to the TV? if you could point to an example of one that would be great.

    Correct - some of the Samsungs have two sat tuners. It's also proper Freesat, so you don't need to manage the list of channels and you will get a full EPG (as long as TV region is set to "UK" in settings).

    Hi JDxtra. I've set up the satellite channels on the tv via the sat tuner on the the tv. When I choose the tv guide I get "No Event Information". Would this be related to your comment above 're. The TV Region?

    No, this is because the Sony TVs aren't "Freesat". So, they will only show now and next information for the channel you are watching.
