    Hi All,
I am looking for advice from you as I want to paint a table and chairs and wondering if you have and tips and what paint I should use. They are a cream colour at present and want to paint them a charcoal grey. I have to sand and prime the table top first as the knots in wood are showing through. I would prefer a matt finish to a gloss finish but obviously the table will be washed, wiped and cleaned so do you know what type of paint I should use?

    Thank you in advance!
    D

I painted a bed and units with colourtrend paint recently. It turned out really well. Good paint. I would stay away from the chalk paint as it tends to rub off. (There may be different types)

Eggshell is your man. It's very low sheen but not full matt - so wipeable.

With modern water based paints, the coverage isn't great and they aren't as hardy as oils. But they do dry fast. Build up the coats following the instructions for recoating times. Don't leave extended periods between coats (like days) and you won't have to sand between coats.

Perhaps 4 coats (post priming) on the top surface and wearing edges and at least 2 on the rest.

You don't have to go mad sanding - use a rough sandpaper though to etch the surface and get good adhesion (especially so on the wearing surfaces). If knots present then you'll need a knot sealing agent applied locally to the knots, else they'll (likely) leach through your finish.

Clean everything. Treat all knots with a shellac primer ( Zinsser BIN or Fleetwood Terminator). Give all surfaces a light sand. Wipe down with damp cloth. Get yourself either a microfibre or preferably a mohair 4 inch roller and tray. There is a self priming and paint called Rustoleum All in One paint. This is what I use on kitchens if I'm hand painting them. If you are using a grey colour, 2 coats should do fine. Remember, the paint wont fully cure for weeks, although it will be dry, so be gentle with them for the first while
