NCT - got a free year

The NCT on my 2001 car had been out of date - was meant to have been done Feb 2018.

Brought it in to be NCTed the other day.

Car passed the NCT first time which was great.

Was fully expecting my NCT to only go up to FEb 2019 and that I'd have to get it NCTed again but they NCTed it up to Feb 2020.

Is there a glitch in the system or did human error work in my favour?

Madness that you can drive around for nearly a year without NCT and get away with it.

We're all guilty of bringing it in a bit late, I've done it as well. But a year (if it was being driven around) is insane. I mean, it's a bit of a bull**** tax and if you can get away with it fair enough as long as it's not a rust bucket.

I bought a car in November which had been out of NCT since July despite having only been traded in the week before. So the previous owner had obviously driven four months without the NCT.

    Fair point.

I was driving around - procrastination & had to cancel one test.

Silly to take the chance I know particularly around Christmas time.

But it passed anyway so it was road worthy.

Yeah, no harm done I suppose.

I imagine it was human error when they were doing up the cert.

I'd be interested to see what happens if you go onto the NCT website and put in your details, what due date does it give you?

The testers don't decide what date goes on a cert, it’s based on the dates and date of first registration.

Surely, it would make no sense whatsoever(although this is Ireland), to pass NCT but for the cert to be valid for only a month. Only to have to re-NCT the car a month later.
I think regardless of when the last NCT was, or when it was valid until, that a NCT pass should have a full 12 month certificate.

There's no disincentive to get the NCT in on the right time then. Clearly nobody is getting caught doing it.

Feb 2020 is next year so it's not an extra year....

You can do the test up to 90 days early so your being due in Feb has this the case even though you left it out a year.

The disincentive is that if you get stopped, you are fined. If the NCT is out on your car for months, do you have to pay more?

But nobody gets caught without their NCT unless they're stopped for another reason. Going off the news reports anyway.

Had a similar situation last year.

NCT expired in September 2017, i bought car in April 2018 with no NCT, Submitted car for NCT same month and failed on a lambda sensor, resubmitted it the following month as i missed the retest date, and it passed in May 2018, cert expired in September 2018, resubmitted car again in June 2018 and passed until September 2019.

They won't issue a cert valid for less than 3 months. so if you are within 3 months of the first missed NCT anniversary you will get 12 months + the difference.

You must of missed the news that a Judge was charged with that very offence in Kerry a few years ago.

It's taken very seriously in Kerry, cars seized as well as fines in court.

Brilliant, so what's the fine if stopped for having an invalid NCT up to 9 months :)

Wasn't always that way apparently, when did it change?

Another Judge, (from Cork) was fined 250 euro after being convicted of the same charge over 10 years ago.
