I think they could take a severe hit in depreciation in 12/18mts. We'll have a golf ID and Polestar 2 at maybe 30/35k with all the future tec they'll bring.
I wouldn't pay 50k for either of the two you picked the Tesla is too old and the Hyundai just doesn't have an interior worthy of it's price tag.

What electric would you pick with a 300 plus range under 50k?

None at the moment, there's some nice ones on the horizon by the end of the year. the 0% bik is tempting if I wanted the company to buy the car but I'm happy enough with diesel/petrol and chargeing the company milage untill the new batch come along. Polestar 2 could be interesting along with what VW is planning.
If I can pick up a Taycan at 50k I'll possibly sell one of the kids so the whole family can fit.

How big are your balls? :p

I'd love a Model S, but early ones are out of warranty (apart from drivetrain / battery) and repairs can be eye watering. Also they just refuse to depreciate much, making them good value new. Not so good value when 5 years old. Your links don't work BTW

The Hyundai, while not cheap for what it is, will certainly be better screwed together and easily outlive the Tesla.

The kona isn’t a 50k car. Looks like a much cheaper car in the inside

If you're looking at Tesla, would you not get one in the UK ?

With good exchange rate at the moment and €0 VRT you'd get a much better deal there ?

At a quick glance I'm seeing 2015-2016 Tesla model S for about £35000 or better depending

Not €0 VRT. You get a discount of €5k off the VRT bill. In this case the bill would be about 14% * the value in Ireland (OMSP) of about €50k, so normally €7k minus the €5k discount is a VRT bill of €2k

Linky? For that money you normally only get fairly tired and leggy '14 cars

In this car I think is pretty simple - Kona is the winner.

    Why?
    Brand new
    Warranty all the way
    Still excellent range
Growing CCS infrastructure (most likely not needed daily/weekly anyway)
Small car - fits country roads and jam packed cities in Ireland

As for MS - gorgeous car... but at 5 yo it’s just an image maker that’s very expensive to repair should an issue/crash occurs...

Right, wasn't aware of the VRT thing. The calculator doesn't have Tesla on it so I just threw in a leaf and it came back €0 , but I guess it's simply because they are valued less. Sorry about that so !

Autotrader was where I threw in a quick search for Tesla

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?postcode=bt11aa&make=TESLA&advertising-location=at_cars&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&page=1

I didn't refine of anything, just "Tesla" - search .

    50k for either seems excessive...

You can command some of the best ice cars for that money. Wait a year or two and you'll have a few more options if range is a big consideration. At tens of thousands less....

This tread looks a bit trollish, but I am no expert.

If we will take it seriously, then why and who on earth would pay 50k for a damn Kona?! Its too expensive.

It looks like you better off buying petrol Kona same spec for 25-27k and spend the left over money on petrol for the next 10 years, then buying 50k electric Kona and still pay your electricity bill. Unless you are pure hypster and try to make yourself feel better about saving planet ( which arguable, because making one and origin of electricity is most likely coal ), then spending 50k on it is madness from financial prospective.

Just to clarify.... the Kona €50k price is the pre-grant price so it is not €50k to you.... its ~€38k OTR.... still too expensive for a Kona!

Model S and X will have a CCS adapter shortly too.
And due to the way the car charges on the existing superchargers (low volt and high amperage, 300+) it will be able to take over 100kW on CCS where available. Kona can only charge in the mid 70kW range and tapers off quickly.

Model S is under warranty for 8 years for drivetrain and battery, which is where most (but not all) problems would occur. And any Tesla on the road from 2014 will most likely have had a drivetrain replacement and/or battery replacement under warranty already.

The Kona may be new, but with the paddy spec levels and the better cheaper offerings from competitors in the next 12 months, it is likely to depreciate a lot more than a model S. Model S have gone up in value in the last 12-18 months, not down. I know because I was initially going to buy one when they were showing as £28-£30k for a S85, instead I bought an Ioniq.
