Changing a toilet seat - need a bit of a steer please

    Hi all,

Trying to fix a wonky toilet seat.

I removed the seat itself and tried tightening the left of the two "bolts" in the picture but it doesn't tighten at all, it just spins away like the retaining nut has fallen off but the bolt doesn't go through the toilet with a nut affixed from underneath. Instead the bolt seems to be in a cavity within the bowl which I'm sure is a slick design but I'm scratching my head as to how I either tighten it or take it out and re-fix it or replace it all together if necessary.

Any suggestions as to how I can tighten it or extract it?

That's a bit of a bum steer ......boom boom ! Thank you thank you I'm here every Tuesday lunch time .

Any chance of a pic of the nuts underneath.
Otherwise you'll have to remove the bowl itself

There are no nuts underneath, that's the whole point.

These are probably some kind of concealed fitting. Usually they're some kind of setup whereby you insert the fitting into the hole, tighten up a screw from above, and the part that's in the hole expands out to hold it in place, a bit like some wall fixtures you can buy.

Google "concealed toilet seat fittings" and you'll see a few examples.

It's a bit hard to see exactly how the ones the OP has are fitted but I'd be looking at trying to prise off that chrome disc somehow, sharp screwdriver blade or knife between it and the cistern and see what's underneath. Hopefully it's a screw you can tighten up.

Thanks all for both the tips and humour!!

Turns out there is a recess on each side at the rear of the bowl which houses the 8mm bar holding the nubbin on which the seat sits.

Unfortunately the plumber who installed the toilet when the house was renovated in 2008 was a real short cut charlie and I've been uncovering his "surprises" over the years much to my cost!!

In this case he used regular nuts (instead of wing nuts) to secure the bolt underneath then backed the bowl into place. At an absolute push (twister game style) I got a hand into the recess with a spanner and managed to eventually get the loose bolt removed. I then got a replacement piece of bar and a wing nut and installed it so all is now good in the world again!!
