E39 strange starting issue

    So i was left win a car park with cranking 530d e39 today but struggled and then barely turned over. Had o get jumped. I was driving for about 1.5 hours before this and went into a shop. Came out and it would not start.

    Once started i drove 30 mins then parked at house. Turned it off and tried to start and same.. cranked but struggling.

    Went out 2 hours later and i can start it.

    This has happened before and if i leave it for a while it will start.

    Very very strange

    I have attached a photo of the battery, not even sure its cprrect one, came out of a 523i e39

    Any ideas ?

    How old is the battery?
    If it's happened before (How long ago?) then it will only get more frequent until you're completely stranded.

    Battery was bought in 2016 bosch s4. But it was for a 523i so i am wondering if it has enough juice to start the 530d

    Looking at realoem.com for both a '97 523i and a '03 530d the batteries align.
    Yours is 95Ah so this should be fine IMO.

    I'd the battery was brand new in 2016 it really should be fine. Check the warranty with the purchase it could still be under warranty.

    Test battery with multimeter. You may have an alternator on the way out

    Ok , so yesterday before this happened i changed the grilles on the bonnet, bonnet felt harder to close... could the bonnet sensor drain the battery ?

    Electrical issues on an e39 could be the death knell of it...

    Thanks for that.. got it sorted... it was the starter motor..

    All fxed and running sweet
