Hi my dd is 2 and a half, my gp has just referred her to an ent (public)because she has very enlarged tonsils and adenoids she has a very hard time breathing while sleeping and snores so loud she stops breathing for about 7 or 8 seconds then gasps for air she can't really breath through her nose at all at night and constantly has to breath through her mouth, I hate it, anyway gp said it would be a year before she's even seen by a consultant but once seen surgery is pretty quick after that, my question is if I get her seen privately by a consultant can she then go on a public waiting list for surgery? We can find the money for an appointment with a consultant but couldn't afford the surgery, please can someone shed some light on this and an idea of costs etc I can't cope with the thought of her getting awful quality sleep and her having to go through this for over a year

We had the exact same story with our 3 year old. We brought him to see an ent consultant privately. He told us he could do the surgery privately 2 weeks after consultantation, but we couldn't afford it and asked could we now be put into the public system.we were told we'd have to start from scratch again and see a public ent consultant. So we did and eventually my son had his surgery, when he was 5.They removed both tonsils and adenoids. They were Huge. We haven't looked back since. The difference in his sleeping is amazing. He sleeps so soundly now, not a peep out of him. He's now 7.

It is up to the consultant and hospital if they will allow it. Ring and ask whichever hospital you are in the catchment area of - if Temple Street, ask to speak to one of the ENT secretaries there, they will know as they have several consultants who sit privately in the private clinic there also. For a switch it is better to be in the correct catchment area.

ENT is the worst speciality nationwide. The public outpatients list is 3 years. The paediatric waiting list has been badly affected by Crumlin closing their waiting list for years.

Thanks so much everyone, I called hospital in my area Monaghan and secretary said no they don't allow itbut I think we are gonna chance it in a different hospital, might be worth a shot,

Just a word of advice on ENTs privately. Our son had grommets in May & when looking for an ENT that our health insurance covers, we found that a lot of the ENTs do their private surgeries in the High Tech Hospitals which a lot of health insurance policies don't cover for kids. It took an awful lot of to-ing and fro-ing with our insurance company to get the appropriate cover for him.

Could highly recommend John Russell in the beacon. Son was with him for 2 years and he was extremely courteous, professional and, most importantly, highly regarded in his field. Vhi covered consultant and surgical costs for grommets in the beacon

Hi thanks for that I know what you are saying but we don't have any at the moment some people told me weare better off just paying ourselves instead of taking up a policy we are looking into it, do you have any other input or did you just want to let me know that?

You can always try the EU cross border directive scheme and get your treatment in Belfast.

    Quick. Before brexit.

I’ve not had experience with tonsillectomy, but my son has had 2 surgeries in the Beacon and they’ve always been very upfront and helpful when I’ve phoned to enquire about costs. I’ve got health insurance, but wasn’t sure what would be covered, so when I rang, I just asked straight out what would the cost be if I was paying myself.

I know for both operations, he had to see the consultant once beforehand for an assessment, and that appointment was €150. Then they have to go back for a post op check about 2 weeks later and that was €100. In terms of the surgery itself, it could be about 1-2k but I’m not 100% on that, I’d say it depends on the surgeon and the surgery itself. Your best bet is to start ringing around.

Agree, appointments privately would be 100-150eur, but surgery could be anything in the thousands.
OP if you are checking into getting health insurance, enquire of the insurance companies are there waiting periods for kids.I know adults often have to wait til the first six months or so of getting insurance (or whatever, depending on the policy), before they can make claims-I don't if the same applies to children.

Most insurance companies do have waiting periods for kids too - so best to double check. And also a lot of insurance companies will not cover if it's a pre-existing condition (pre-existing prior to you taking out the cover).

Thanks so much everyone for your help greatly appreciated, We're going to go ahead privately have no other choice really as she's struggling at night, yes we looked into health insurance and just as stated above we would have to 6to 9 months before we could make a claim, as for eu Cross border directive she has to be seen by a consultant publicly first to qualify so that 2 years away wouldnt be an option, I'm going to go with the Beacon as its close. Many thanks

Our son had his grommets in the Beacon under Paul Burns, we found everyone in there really nice and helpful. Best of luck with it all!

She doesn’t need to be seen by a consultant publicly first, she just needs to have been referred to a consultant in Ireland(not be seen by them). I honestly would look into more because it won’t cost nearly as much as a private surgery in Ireland.

You would have to pay about €200 for a private ENT consult first.

For children under 12 the cost to get the actual operation done looks a bit like this. Removal of adenoids +/- Adenoids, Surgeon costs about €360, anaesthetist costs about €190 and bill for the bed is €407.

So all said and done budget €1200 and hope your daughter does not get post op bleeding as you have to pay out again for that :(
A mate of mine had it done with their little one about two years ago so I know what your going through.
