Data protection breech

I was trying to set up a new bank account today after returning home from Canada after 7 years. I didn't have the correct proof of address so the person in the bank decided to look up my information on the electoral roll. As I wasn't there I later rang them and discovered that the bank did not have the right to do this and was it data protected and they had no right to do the search. Obviously I am really pissed off now. What should I do?

So the person in the bank searched a publicly available document, presumably to assist you in your account application?
And you want to take action of some sort?
What loss or damages did you incur?

make a complaint to the data protection office
i an sure they will award you 20 million euros or 4% of the bank's yearly turnover.
or if i took you up wrong please post a revised explanation of the supposed data breach

i suppose concievably if the bank keeps your address they got from the electoral roll without your permission there is a breach. but from my reading the op supplied his address and the bank official used the electoral roll to confirm this in lieu of another proof of address. the bank official should be commended for taking this initiative, as i get nothing but hassle when opening a bank a/c(or supplying required proofs) as i have no utility bills in my name(all are in wife's name)

To clarify the bank can only use the edited register, not the full register, using the full register is an offence.

Side Query, how is someone only home from Canada after 7 years on the list? To be on the 2018 list you should be ordinarily living in Ireland on 25th September 2017.

The OP wasn't on the register!

The bank can use checktheregister.ie the same as anyone. The edited register only comes into play for marketing purposes.

Anybody can view check the register (you need to know names and addresses to use it), however using the details on it for anything other than an electoral or other statutory purpose is an offence, mind you however verification of address is a statutory requirement for a bank, however using the register is not a prescribed method.

There is nothing which limits the edited register to marketing use only.

Have you ever tried to get off the register? I am still registered at my old address that I have not lived at for years.

No one seems to care least not the local authority which have been informed twice by letter.

They certainly used to have the electoral register in the public library if you needed to look up something there. Don't know whether that's changed though.

Nothing has changed there. Libraries still have copies as do post offices.

Thank you for your replies. When I rang the electoral role people about it, they made it out that it was a huge deal. Hence my post. I now realise it's not and feel really stupid.
No I wasn't going to try and get money out of anyone. More should I report this.
    Anyway thanks.
