XC90 v X5 v Discovery sport

Looking at the above as a purchase for 2019, xc90 and x5 would need to be 2015 (both 2.0) and discovery sport could be brand new. Nothing else worth considering tbh. Hoping to put pen to paper in Feb. The discovery is a real contender at the moment I'm just not convinced they are reliable. Need something that will work every day for the next 10 years, are the 2.0s in the volvo and bmw good. I know both units were introduced in 2015 and being the first iteration of anything comes with associated risks.. Hoping to get similar reliability as my 450,000 km 05 altea.

Dunno about the Volvo but the 3.0 is better in the bmw apparently. If you can get land rover new at least you'll have the warranty for whatever length. Xc90 and X5 would be bigger than the land rover I thought

I don't want another VW for at least 10 years I don't care how good they are, 450000km in one is enough. Has to be 2.0 for economic reasons.

Leftfield suggestion - Jaguar F Pace?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,791 ✭✭✭JJJJNR

P.s. I'm keep the altea as the shopping/dump run/dog run/ mtb muck car. So our story isn't over yet bros.

this is the special VIP car that I will only occasionally get to sit in and the dogs will never be allowed in. (:pac:)

Are they the same as the discovery sport bazz, same platform.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_Land_Rover_car_platforms

According to wikipedia the Disco Sport shares the same platform with the E Pace. The F Pace shares the platform with the RR Velar.

Avoid anything JLR, the quality of what they're producing right now is shocking. I hearing multiple stories of new cars being rejected at the minute.

If you must a late Disco 4. I'd love one but could stomach the shyte that goes with them right now.

Consider a 2017 + automatic crew cab Navara with a central locking linked canopy.

    I absolutely love mine (Tekna).

Very smooth ride, very quiet and more economical than I thought it would be.
    Tonnes of room too.

I thought as much.. they are really nice but that puts them off the list. What about the other two XC90 2.0 and the X5 2.0. Am I barking up the wrong tree expecting reliability here. If that's the case we might go back to a ford smax. Are all new cars rubbish. I've been living in bangernomics heaven for too long.

I would but the target audience is mainly female, not sure it would work in those circles.

A 2015 2.0 BMW should be on the new engine and away from the timing chain issues.

Having had a 3.0 BMW followed by the 2.0 over the last 18 months, is there any way to stretch to the 3.0???
    MPG will not change much.

Bro has an E Pace. Fine looking and really moves in the 240 BHP. Great if only one or two in the car. Much much smaller than x5. No bigger inside than a kuga.

If brand new and staying in warranty I'd have no bother going JLR. Serious comfort and drive.

What’s going on? Jesus they can’t afford to be repeating the mistakes of the past with quality and reliability.
I thought they’d worked hard to overcome all that stuff

I have the same and agree, only get about 36mpg vs 30 mpg with the 3 lit.

It’s a weird looking thing. The previous model looked chunky and premium, the new one looks cheap like a 1980s toy spaceship.

Cost of financing for the parent company , dwindling sales and a whole lot of diesel cars leading to cutting corners would be my guess.

I remember reading on a jag forum, where an extremely highly regarded member posted that the fit out budget for the XE’s interior had been slashed by 20% at the last minute, so cutbacks have been around for a while.

As for the late disco 4 suggestion, well my 2014 with 120k on it had numerous issues including a fuel injector that caused 11 grand worth of damage. Not an unusual problem with that car.

Never liked the Disco Sport, unlike the evoque it looks awfully cheap in the metal.

Never said they were perfect, just less prone to massive failure........but it's all relative when you compare them to other LR products. :pac:

Their sales were booming and booming there for a good few years, especially the Evoque models. As you say the quality hadn’t kept pace and if you’re not matching BMW or Audi on quality and charging the same money- customers aren’t idiots.

I wouldn't say new cars are rubbish but one of these jeeps is far more complex than your Altea increasing complexity tends to reduce reliability as logically the more components in the car the more thats there to fail or give issues. At the same time any of these are going to be far nicer than the Altea so thats the benefit. But yes you need to be realistic you not going to buy any of these and put 450k km on them with low maintenance costs.

Have a D5 XC90 about 12mts. Had a nice bit of work done under warranty. Looked at the X5 and disco at the time along with the Q7, the Volvo was plenty quick enough with the D5 engine and it was the most practical for a family of 5. The X5 probably had the worst use of interior space and it felt cheap inside with some awful plastics falling off, poor build quality, really disappointed as I have a 5 series and it's a lot better put together.
The budget option was a new Peugeot 5008 which in fairness holds its own on pratacality and price we were about to put a deposit on one.
I think the Volvo looks the best it has presence.

But they are. They’ve minor issues eg shoes locking on the parking brake which I never got sorted to the fuel pump going (said injector by mistake). A new engine isn’t unheard on them
And this was a car that should have had issues sorted years before. As always with these things HonestJohn is worth a look.

Had the mother in laws T8 Xc90 for a month during all of the work on the disco. Loved it and thought it was fantastic car. But it spent a couple of weeks (collectively) in with J&P during their year of ownership. Quite glitchy machine.

How do you find the road noise in the xc90, is it a motorway cruiser. Ours will be on the n11 most of its life so motorway refinement is very important. looking at the q7 also again be 3 or 4 years old, reviews are very much in favour of the q7 for motorway driving.

I did think it would be quiter for such a luxury vehicle. It's not loud though and i've a heavy enough foot it's due a set of tyres so I might put quiter ones on it. You could definterly cruise in it, it's the mrs car, i'm the one does the motorway miles but i've a 530d. I'd prefer a car if on the motroway the whole time and didn't need that much space.
The Audi, mmm was a very bad selection around when we were looking. Would I go back and have a second look, proably would just looking at the ones for sale now.

Just after thinking of it, the guy bought a Q7 after trading in the XC90. He had a lot of warranty problems, think the big center screen was repalced twice and he had trouble getting them to do it, there was a new one in it when we bought it, it did mess up as well we lost all screens, no dials and no center screen, could still drive it but no idea of your speed couldn't change the heating/radio etc. Stayed like that for a few days, took it back to volvo and they done a software update that was about 7mts ago.
Two of the electric window motors were replaced as well under our ownership but all under warranty. We got an extended mapfre warranty for ours when the Volvo warranty ran out a few mts ago.
If I was to bet what's going to go wrong next my money is on the central locking. It just seem a bit glitchy trying to get into it sometimes. It's going back for it's first out of warranty service next week it'll be intresting to see what it throws up.

Much prefer a range Rover sport than a discovery sport. The back of the Disco is just horrible.

Sure you mean the Disco on it’s own. The Disco Sport is the freelander replacement.

Add the outlander S phev to the mix. I haven't been this confused since I was 12.

Ahh you haven't had a spin in a Velar yet. If we didn't need the space of the volvo that was definatley a contender.
