Drink driving conviction & mental health isssue

I'm asking for a friend so a little sketchy on exact details (and before the "friend" comments start, do check out my other posts and you will see I'm currently insured!).

My 50 y/o male friend in Dublin, '06 1.4 car, lost his licence about 6 years ago for drink driving. Shortly after he was diagnosed with a mental health condition. He has since responded very well to the treatment and has cut down his drinking. Last month his GP signed him off as fit to drive for 10 years.

He has his licence back now and just before xmas rang around for insurance, most would not quote and, the only two that would quoted 6k (prob same underwriter).

Given that he got quotes at 6k, is that tantamount to refusal and thus can he take a case to the ombudsman (or whatever it's called)?

    Any other advice?

He has been quoted, so unfortunately it's not tantamount to a refusal.
The risk associated with his previous driving history has resulted in a quote that is, as far as the underwriters are concerned entirely commensurate with the level of risk he presents.

Nope he got a quote, an individual known to me just recently back on the road after a DD conviction only quote she could get was 19k unaffordable but still meets the quotation criteria.

    Thank for replies. 19k wow.

So, it's the DD and not the health issue putting it up? Aren't these things "forgotten" or lapsed after 7 years, and would that be from the daate of his conviction, or the date when he got his licence back (if the former he may try again next year perhaps)

The fact he has not been insured for several years is also a factor.

So she’s paying 19k a year on insurance? It would be cheaper for her to get a taxi.

Use a broker that specialises in this type of use case.

    EG :https://culleninsurances.ie/convicted-drivers.html

(I have no links to this company in particular, or dealt with them specifically, just showing as an example of what's out there)

You said just recently back on the road after DD, I thought you meant she was driving again.

Apologies I should have said she just got her licence back.

Cut down - not stopped. Maybe this is for the best.
