Naturalized citizen application? needs original current passport?

Making an application to become naturalised citizen, and only after noticing that they require the original passport of the applicant, my other half.
The problem is that the passport is imminently needed for going abroad. Is there any way of getting around this, does anyone know? i.e. submitting passport as proof but having it returned quick smartly...?

And how long does the process take? Had impression it was a few months long, like 3 months?

I was trying to call a phone number to discuss application before Christmas but phone is not answered.

For us, it was returned within 3/4 weeks, but that was pre-BREXIT, they gotten a lot busier since then.

Depending on how "imminently needed for going abroad" it is, and the duration of the trip abroad, perhaps delay apply till they return.

If an Irish citizen was applying for a visa and had sent their passport to an embassy, can they use their pasport card to travel to countries where it's valid?

Yes, that is the whole idea of the passport card.

I applied in November and got my passport back in a week.
