Selling a car before first taxing of it (i.e. not getting registration certificate)

    Hi,

I bought in April this yr in the UK and paid the VRT previously. However the car ended up being parked on my drive and I didn't use it. Therefore I didn't bother taxing it. It's my understanding that you have to tax the car to get registration certificate. I am now looking to sell the car but obviously I don't have the registration certificate to do the transfer of ownership when selling.

I just seen something earlier which indicates i should have declared the car not in use with the tax office this is something I suppose I will have to look into. But I am planning to sell the car over the next few days but the motor tax offices are closed until the 2nd of January when I called up so I'm wondering can anybody please advise how I can go about selling the car and ensuring that the transfer of ownership can be arranged properly.

Thanks in advance for anybody who can help,
    Sean

As far as I know you can only get the registration cert on a newly imported car after you first tax it. Can you log into the motortax website using the car's Irish reg and last 6 or 7 digits of the VIN as the PIN? If you can tax it online then maybe just tax it on behalf of the new owner, then when the registration cert comes to you fill in the change of ownership section with the new owner's details and send it off.

However if you cannot tax it online then you probably owe arrears because you originally didn't declare the car off the road. Not sure if you can pay arrears online. In that case you might have to wait until the motor tax office opens again and venture in to sort it out.
