    Hello!

    What's this all about?

Well, Christmas is a time for Television and we in the Television Forum had a Christmas TV thread in 2017, so it's now a tradition. Here is the 2017 edition, would you look at the hairstyles, what were we thinking? https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=105575004

Feel free to let us know about anything decent looking you have circled in your TV Guide, or if you're watching something but you can't be bothered opening a thread about it.

Or have a moan about how the schedules are messed up. Or if you see a classic film on. That sort of thing. The door is open to anything at all, really. It's a bit of a continuity thread until things get back to normal in January.

Is Die Hard on? What about Willy Wonka? Any decent Christmas Specials ocurring? What's not on that should be on?

Don't be shy, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each and every one of you. And that includes you lurkers. Go on, give us a post.

Please let there be Chitty Chitty Bang Bang this year. And The King and I, which I haven't seen in years and years

Honestly it's the same old crap every Christmas - terrible specials, the same obvious film picks and just a few interesting bits and pieces to be found in the more obscure corners of the schedule.

I am looking forward to this one on BBC Four on Sunday (9.30pm)

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0001qqy

"The Secret Story of the BBC Christmas Tapes

December 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the BBC VT Christmas tapes, a series of risque and hilarious bloopers compiled by the BBC’s VT department. These festive mash-ups of outtakes, blunders and specially filmed comedy sketches were never meant for public viewing and were shown to staff at Christmas parties. Their story has not been told before - until now! This is the latest documentary from comedian Rhys Thomas, creator of Brian Pern and director of the Emmy Award-winning Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender."

For the sports fan who doesn’t have Sky Sports...

On Christmas Day, there’s four live NBA games on Sky Sports Mix.

On St Stephens Day, three live FA Premier League games, and Gillette Soccer Special, on Sky One.

Not sport, but Sky are also showing “The Greatest Showman” on Sky One on Christmas Day.

Honestly it's the same old crap every Christmas - terrible specials, the same obvious film picks and just a few interesting bits and pieces to be found in the more obscure corners of the schedule.

And I love how the TV execs are like "okay it's Christmas. Christmas means families are probably together. Let's put on the same films every year because they will surely sit down and watch it together".

I can count on one hand the number of times we as a family sat down to watch a film together in my lifetime, not just during the christmas period. Much prefer watching something on my own or with the OH, and I know I am not the only one.

But I think if some TV station decided to air genuine all-time classics, either modern and older, once a night, it would be better than the usual festive clap-trap thrown up every year.

And don't get me started on "Christmas specials"

A new 3.5 hour adaptation of Watership Down on BBC1 over the next 2 nights (Saturday 22nd, Sunday 23rd)

Ben Kingsley, Rosamund Pike, Rory Kinnear amongst the voice cast.

The New Watership Down Remake Is On TV Tonight, Are You Ready For it?
But, will this be as dark as people feared? Well, the executive producer, Roy Aitken, told the Telegraph the updated version will not just tone down the levels of on-screen violence to make it more appropriate for children, but give a boost to its female characters.

Not sure about that Watership Down as far as small children are concerned, if it's the Netflix version then the reviews state things like:
And there is death in “Watership Down.” Holding with the novel’s heavy themes — and the original film’s scarring nature — Netflix’s adaptation is very much not for small children.

    Die Hard 2 is amazing.

I hated Watership Down the cartoon. I can't think of a single reason anyone would want their kids to watch it.

Can't wait for MOTD & The NFL Show.

    Happy Christmas!

Watching The Snowman and The Snowdog for the first time since it's premiere. The main song feels like a youtube video where someone took out the proper song and inserted one they liked.

I don't think so, in general if Sky have it on one of their Movie Channels it won't be on the free stations :(

Brilliant film, never get tired of watching it.

Yes best of them on tonight/tomorrow morning on Channel 4...
    9 - A Christmassy Ted
Ted's quick thinking whilst lost in a department store's lingerie department earns him the coveted Golden Cleric award. So why doesn't he feel happy? Mrs Doyle's attempts to hang up the Christmas decorations become undone around her. She's also none too pleased at her Christmas present. Meanwhile, an "old friend" of Ted decides the time is ripe for a visit. When first shown, this hour-long episode attracted Channel 4's largest ever non-film audience viewing figures.

    00:10 - A Song for Europe
Ted is goaded by Father Dick Byrne into attempting to write a song for "Eurosong '96" (spoof of the Eurovision Song Contest). Despite having a song with only one note, Ireland's fear of winning again (and having to fund it) plays into Ted and Dougal's hands. This mirrors the real life belief that Ireland chose the 1994 Eurovision entry, "Rock 'n' Roll Kids", which was thought to differ greatly from the typical winning song, so as to ensure that they did not have to host the contest again.

00:40 - Are You Right There Father Ted?
Ted's "Chinaman" impression goes down badly with Craggy Island's newly arrived Chinese community and he is branded a racist. In an attempt to prove he isn't a racist, Ted decides to hold a presentation on multiculturalism in Craggy Island to the Chinese. The title is a play on "Are Ye Right There Michael", a comic song by Percy French about the West Clare Railway.

    01:10 - Speed 3
When Ted and Dougal expose a philandering milkman, Pat Mustard, he takes revenge on his replacement, Dougal, by putting a bomb on the milk float. If Dougal's speed drops below 4 mph, the bomb will explode, taking Dougal with it...

    01:35 - Escape from Victory

Part 1 of 2. Ted takes great steps to ensure he wins a bet with Dick Byrne on the outcome of the All-Priests Over-75's Five-a-Side Football Championship. The title is a pun on the football movie Escape to Victory, about a football game played between prisoners of war and their guards in World War II.

02:05 - Kicking Bishop Brennan Up the Arse
Part 2 of 2. The only episode to follow on directly from the previous one. Exposed as a cheat at the end of the previous episode, and with this episode's title as his forfeit, a terrified Ted tries to draw upon his courage to complete the deed.

For those in need of a good laugh, ‘Jaws:The Revenge’ is on UTV tonight at 11.25pm :pac:

That's the one that Michael Caine has never seen, but it paid for his gaf. :pac:

Jaws 2 is on Virgin Media Three at 9pm tonight, if you're so inclined. Lacks of the menace of the original and not really anyone to root for, other than the Chief.

Slightly off topic but ITV 4 is now screening Jaws in the original aspect ratio so hopefully that'll be true of all films from hereon.

    Just sayin’.

Just thinking that earlier, its one of the few lyrics Bros have in common with the Sultans of Ping.

    Edit
    Bros: "You've read Karl Marx
And you've taught yourself to dance
    You're the best by far"

(from When Will I Be Famous?)

Sultans Of Ping "My brother knows Karl Marx
He met him eating mushrooms in the People's Park"

    (from Where's My Jumper?)
