Medical Card Renewal.

    Hi

I just wanted to get a few opinions on my medical card renewal. I first got a medical card about two years ago and I noticed that it had an expiry date in February 2019. So I was expecting to have to go through the renewal process sometime in the new year. This morning however a new medical card arrived in the post without me applying for it and I'm fine with that. The only issue I have is that the expiry date of the new card is February 2020. So the new card will basically extend the expiry of the old one by a year. That seems a bit silly. I would have thought that a card would be valid for two or three years before another renewal would be needed. It's a pretty minor issue but do medical cards not be issued with a standard time before they need renewing. If anyone has gotten there card renewed what was the validity period for the card.

my mam gets a new card every year, but she also has a long term documented illness that she needs it for so she can collect her meds (would venture into thousands a month otherwise) and has had an exemption mailed t the dept byher doc

Mine has been issued yearly the last 2 years in a row so it expires after a year. Have to do the online review for it each year.

Thanks for the quick replies. I would think that the hassle of reviewing cases every year would cost more time and money than they would save by denying the few cases that lose the card. Like you mentioned my condition is long term and costs thousands in equipment and pharmacy costs so I would have expected them to renew it for two years at least.
