Interview answer dilemma

I've a question for those moments in an interview where you're asked if you are capable of a particular task, or of a certain personality type, etc. You know straight away whether the answer wanted is yes or no, but you don't know if you can demonstrate it or prove it at that point in time.

If you feel that you can't back up your answer, is it best to just say "oh yeah definitely" (as if it goes without question) & let the interviewer move on to the next question? As opposed to feeling as if you have to back up your answer when you can't? The reason I'm asking is because I feel that the latter can lead to awkward moments.

It happened to me recently and I ended up saying something stupid. The reason I felt the need to try back up my answer was because I truly believed what in my answer, and thought it would be a shame not to. For a while I was stumped as to how I ended up saying such a thing, but on hindsight it kind of makes sense. I don't think she was even trying to lay a trap for me.

"I would be confident I can do it. In previous roles, and in college, I have been asked to do things which I had either never done before, or which were regarded as extremely difficult, but I was able to do them, and I did them well. For example... [give example]".

"I enjoy being challenged, and I love learning new things, so yes, I think it won't be a problem at all".

    Something like that.

Op agree with OMM 000- these are attitudinal questions to see how you react or respond when put under pressure, yes the example is necessary to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitude, equally important is to refer to governing & company/organisational policy and procedure, the team, health and safety, etc - you need a beginning to clarify the task in hand/goal, Middle ( how you carried it out, objective, who you consulted, vision, risk assessment, resources used, time frame, End, always end on a positive note, the outcome, the result/s, findings, the learning, the job satisfaction, who and what were the benefits, hope this makes sense!! It is vital that you use the buzz words, and cover all angles. the best of luck, you'll be well able!!
