Tesla charging options

    We are looking at a Model S and a bit unclear about charging options. I've been reading about it for a few hours and just getting more confused. Is there an advantage to getting a Tesla home charger versus another brand? If we are not near a Supercharger can we use any SCP/FCP or will we need an adapter or special cable?

    It depends on the onboard AC charger. Early cars came with 11kW chargers with the option to add a 2nd charger to bring AC charging up to 22kW. Later cars again had a standard 11kW AC charger with an optional upgrade to a 16kW charger (might be 17kW) Google it.
    So the humble green 22kW slow charge post at the roadside can provide a Tesla model S with 110km per hour if it has 22kW AC chargers, 55km per hour if it has 11kW charger, 80km per hour if it has the 16kW (?) Charger.

    You can buy a CHAdeMO adapter that will allow you DC charge at 48kW ish which is about 240km per hour. It will cost about €500.

    I dont have a Tesla home charger but I believe they can provide 11kW AC charge if you have a big enough supply cable, which is 48km/hr.
    I do have the Tesla UMC which is their version of the granny charger. However the UMC can use adapters to connect to: domestic 3 pin at 10A (2.4kW, about 12km/hr) Blue commando socket at 16A (3.8kW, about 16km/hr) Red 3 phase socket at 16A x 3 (11kW, 48km/hr)

    I have the Tesla charger. The main advantage for me is that it is always tethered so there is no fussing with taking cables out of the boot etc. It provides 7Kw but can provide more if you have a bigger supply coming in (which I dont). Small things with the Tesla charger that are inconsequential really: it automatically opens the charge port door when you press the button on the connector and it has Green LEDs on the base unit that swoop when the car is charging.

As the other poster said, the CHAdeMO is needed if you want to use the ESB fast chargers - otherwise the standard cable that comes with the car will plug into the normal ESB public charge points. The CHAdeMO is €500 and really is a must if you travel distances at all - for the price of the car, it's bananas that it doesnt come as standard..

    You'll also have access to the Tesla Superchargers. There are three sites right now Limerick road (Birdhill), Cork Road (Ballacolla) and Belfast road (Castlebellingham). The clear blackspot is the Galway/Sligo road. Superchargers have been promised in Applegreen in Enfield for ages now but still no sign of them. I've no doubt that more sites will happen at some stage, but for now, these are the only ones that I'm aware of. Supercharging is free for a certain period / for life - depending on when you bought your car.

    I think this is really true for markets like Ireland where there isn't 100% supercharger coverage. In most of the US and Norway there are more superchargers so it's less needed. (Based solely on comments from various youtubers!!)

    Was it much hassle getting it installed? Did you have to run a wire directly from your fuse box to the charger to get 7kw?

    No - not really much trouble - all done in a day. They did indeed run it from the fusebox and put in a mcb/trip switch specifically for it.
