Very strange studio set up & they went all out with the graphics. Have to laugh at the O'Briens they'll give absolutely nothing away!

Will probably be Sexton for person of the year.

Probably the rugby squad will get the nod for team of the year. Although I would prefer for the ladies hockey team to get that one.

If Charlton wasn't so aggressive in going after the English lads, would Ireland have even qualified for those tournaments?

Glad the hockey team have got a recognition. Public will vote for the rugby team.

You could probably get the insulation easy enough it’s the finish that will be the problem. It’s usually spread on a handy man may do it on the understanding that it’s your problem afterwards.

All "those english lads" had and have legitimate family ties to Ireland, unlike our rugger imports who just rock on up and become token irishmen without any connection to Ireland.

So appropriate to see the Minister for Hockey hand over the award.

Well, I was wrong. Delighted for them.
Them or the rugby team would have been worthy winners.

    Deserved result!

The general public still don't give a fcuk about rugby.

    Glorious. Truly glorious.

They don't give a **** about the RTÉ Sports Awards more like.

That's debatable - but its more surprising that they (we) give a fcuk about hockey, in my opinion.

Only in Ireland would a team that gets hammered 6-0 in a final be deemed the team of the year. Absolute joke.

Yes they had a great run to the final but they then got hammered in embarrassing fashion.

The Irish rugby team beat the number one ranked side in the world - unlike the hockey team - as well as winning the Grand Slam, and beating Australia in a test series. It was the most successful year in the history of the sport.

    Total farce.

Also just realised Schmidt didn't win manager of the year either! That takes the cake.

They absolutely do. Rugby is quite a well followed sport here, a sh1t lot more than hockey.....but we all love a loser/underdog story, and that is why hockey won here. They were big news for a short period of time in one tournament...

I can totally see why the hockey team won over the rugby team. It's not just a simple 'who is the best sports team in Ireland' or 'who won the most matches this year'. The achievement of the Irish women getting to a WC final was arguably greater than the phenomenal year the rugby fellas had,

It was not in the same league as the men’s brilliant year. No way...

Capped off with a win over NZ...

In a normal year, the rugby team winning the Grand Slam, winning Down Under and beating the All Blacks would win the team sport award in a canter.

But I can see the logic in the hockey women getting the award. They were ranked 15th of 16 before the tournament started, whereas the rugby team would already have been top 3 or so in the world.

As I said above, the award is not necessarily about who is 'the best team in Ireland' or 'the team with the most excellence'. If it was purely about rewarding excellence, then the rugby fellas would have won everything last night ; manager of the year, team of the year and sports personality of the year.

(Personally though, I would have given the manager's award to Joe Schmidt).

Apples & oranges - Irish men's rugby professionals beat New Zealand at the end of their season versus Irish women's self funded amateur hockey team made the final of a World Cup & did much better than their rankings against pros. Not the first time Irl beat NZ either, now if they can do it in a World Cup ...

I doubt there were huge numbers voting on the awards last night. Apart from general apathy towards these awards shows, I think many people would have assumed that the rugby team and coach would have won anyway.

Any concerted voting effort by the hockey community on behalf of the hockey team would have seen them pick up the awards.

Hockey was fantastic yes but Schmidt and Ireland rugby team should’ve won the manager and team of the year.

I see the England women's netball team won the BBC Sports Personality team of the year award (in a year when the men's football team reached the WC semi final).

Again, I think these awards are meant to be more of a "recognition" award than simply giving it to the best sports team in the country. It's not just about who won the most matches during the year or the most silverware or who is the highest rated in the world rankings, there are other factors at work.

Teams who are winning loads of actual silverware are not going to be that pushed about whether they win a TV trophy or not.

The women's netball team won Gold in their chosen sport. England beat Tunisia, Panama and Sweden ;)

(edit......I am mockingly playing down the England football team's achievement at the WC in jest but they can be exaggerated also)

For sure, but the principle is exactly the same. I think people are assuming these awards are to honour the 'best' or 'most talented' sportsperson or team of the year but that is simply not the case. It's more a case of which one made a big impact on the public or left an impression during the year for whatever reason. There is a clue in the BBC title "sports personality" as to what the real criteria is.
