Illness Benefit when working part time

I’d love some clarity on this please... I’ve been in the fortunate position of never having to claim any sort of social welfare payment before so am completely in the dark about how it works.

I’m currently pregnant and suffering quite badly with Hyperemesis. I work part time at the moment - one day a week plus one weekend day a month. They’re long enough shifts in a busy role where I’m on my feet and I’ve been struggling a lot.. my consultant wants to sign me off but I’ve been resisting as we can’t really afford for me not to be working.

Given that I work one day a week would I need to wait six weeks before I would be paid illness benefit? As I know they don’t pay for the first six days of illness... Would I get a pro-rata rate of IB? Currently my gross for the one day a week is more than the full rate of IB so we would be down considerably even on full rate

While you are working at all even one day a week you will not get Illness Benefit for the other days.

Ok I see. You won’t get anything from DSP for the first 6 days and then as long as your PRSI is adequate you’ll be paid an amount according to your weekly income in 2016. If you wait till 2019 then they will look at your weekly income in 2017.

Ok so it would only be one week where I wouldn’t have any payment at all... good to know

Yes. Just one week of no pay, not six weeks but I see where you got the idea from. (Your 6 working days).

Your rate on illness benefit is determined by your own gross weekly income in 2016. If you satisfy all the conditions you would get
    198 if earning over €300
    155 for earning between 220 and 300
    126 for earning between 150 and 220
    89 for earning under 150.

If you are looking to claim for any dependents your partner's income needs to be under €400 gross.
