I'm a Nordie, and asking for a friend as I don't know the ins and outs of VRT - if buying a used car from UK, does the VRT have to be paid as a separate payment or can it be bundled into the finance payments? I'd assume separate but would like to confirm.

VRT is a registration tax. It is paid on a used car from the UK/NI when the car is imported and registered in the ROI, not when it's purchased.

it sounds like this could be a purchase of a UK car from a RoI dealer, in which case the dealer will have to pay the VRT on registration and the price your friend would be paying would be the gross figure, including VRT, and in effect the VRT could be included in the finance figure.

You won't get finance from a UK dealer for a export car. If you are buying in the UK you need to have the money available to pay for it. If you are getting a loan then you can get the extra to cover the VRT, but it will be paid in Ireland when you register the car not when you buy in the UK..

Buying a UK car from an Irish dealer is already covered. Just be careful that they sell one you with an Irish registration number not one still on UK plates, you could get a big VRT penalty if the dealer doesn't register it.
