Failed NCT - drivers window won’t open

I’m have a 2006 VW Polo and when I turn the key in the drivers door it unlocks the drivers door barely but not the other doors. I’ve to unlock/lock my car from the passenger door. Also my drivers windows doesn’t open using the window opening mechanism. The passenger window will open using the switch on the passenger door. I’ve failed the NCT because my driver window doesn’t open. This problem has been happening on and off for the past 2 years and it comes and goes (why I don’t know?).

I’ve brought it to garages to ask what the problem is. One garage thought it was the lock on the drivers door so a new lock was put in only to find that it made no difference so old lock was put back in again. A new fuse was also put in but this didn’t solve the issue either. I’ve spent money on trying to sort it but nobody seems to be able to fix the problem for me.

I hope that my description above makes sense to someone here. I was hoping that someone here would be able to help. I am under a bit of pressure as I’ll need to get it sorted and rearrange to bring it back to NCT Centre.

If the switch on the drivers side isn't opening the drivers window or the passenger window but the passenger window opens from its own switch then I'd be checking the driver side switches first.

I’ve done that. Garage thought that a fuse needed replacement but it didn’t make any difference.

Has an auto electrician looked at it? It sounds like it could be the regulator.

I'd be metering the terminals at the motor to see if its getting voltage.
if not start following it back .
its not hard but will take time and someone with interested in doing the job

Check the cables coming into the door.

Sounds very like the cables are damaged.

Where abouts are you, we could advise of a auto electrician.

same on my 05 skoda - works most of the time aparently to do with control unit in door most likely.

ran out when i saw he didnt have the window down going into nct and then slammed the door and it worked again so passed !

Leave the window down when you hand the keys.

Can't fail if window is open.

Don't think this is correct. They check the window opens and closes.

It's to see can one get out as in an emergency.

I've come across a few where the window will go up but not down and passed.

That would ring alarm bells for me. A fuse is a binary thing, it's either OK or blown, like a light bulb. You can see if it's gone, or double check with a meter. Changing a fuse in the hope it will fix something is desperate. Now, the problem could be with the fuse 'holder' making a bad connection.

But much more likely, as someone else pointed out, is the wiring between the door and A pillar, constant open/close of the door breaks the wires.

I had this issue with my A4, have a thread in another forum I can find for you if you like showing my repairs.

If thats all that has been tried then it doesn't sound like anybody has tried very hard to fix the two problems.

    Another debug trick to consider.

Put the key in the door lock (drivers side) and turn and hold to the left. This should trigger all windows to open.

works with the open button on the key as well, hold open button down all windows open, hold down close button all windows close - think its on all VAG cars.

(it works on my car - but the buttons on the drivers side dont)
