    The Wire
    The Sopranos
    Breaking Bad
    Black Mirror
    24

The first 3 would probably be quite common. The Wire and Sopranos still today in my opinion are the benchmark for other shows to match.

Breaking Bad gets a vote as it's a rare show that gets better each season and rewards the viewer with an excellent conclusion. The creator nearly cancelled the show before production when he heard about 'Weeds' as he felt it was too similar. What a travesty that would have been.

Black Mirror. I love dark twisted stories and this show provides it. Upcoming 5th season needs to move away from virtual reality plots though.

    24. I pick this because it was the 1st American tv drama show I properly watched and binged. It certainty has its flaws but nothing better than Jack Bauer running around for 24 hours shouting DAMN IT!!!

    Black Mirror
    Breaking Bad
    Stranger Things
    Love/Hate
Dark (only 1 season so far)

Plenty of other shows had a great first season or two but then fell apart afterwards. It's what makes Breaking Bad even more impressive really is that it went out on a high.

The Wire - The cast, the setting, the dialogue; everything was perfect
Bojack Horseman - It's odd that an anthropomorphic animated comedy turned out to be the must accurate study of humanity on television.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Serialized storytelling, well rounded ensemble and rich supporting cast, DS9 is Sci-Fi at its best.
Freaks & Geeks - Before its time and taken from us far too soon. Freaks & Geeks had everything you wanted and more.
Seinfeld - George Costanza is the greatest TV character of all-time, and Kramer isn't too far behind him. Also, hilarious.

    1. Game of thrones
For me the writing, depth and complexity of the characters and unpredictability put it a step above everything else.

    2. Breaking Bad
A show that just gets better and better and a show that ended at the right time with a perfect ending.

    3. Battlestar Gallactica
I would describe this as the wire set in space. It deals with some very serious and deep topics - it's just a shame the show has a terrible name

    4. Black Mirror
Very dark, very disturbing and quite powerful in places. Deals with topics no other show deals with

    5. Can't decide between the Wire, Peaky Blinders, Sopranos, Boardwalk empire and Vikings

    No order:

The Wire - Just an absolutely fantastic show. Amazing writing, and loved the majority of the characters whether they were good or bad simply because they were all so well written and acted. A real slow burn with amazing story and character arcs.

Breaking Bad - Probably don't need to explain this one

Band of Brothers - Amazingly well acted, some incredible scenes and episodes. Real gut punches throughout which is a sign of how much it makes you care for the characters even in such a large ensemble show.

The Office (UK) - Just so hilarious throughout. So many great lines and scenes, really well acted. Got out at the right time too (if you ignore all the later David Brent stuff).

Firefly - Took me ages to get around to watching, but it was well worth the wait. Some of the few episodes aren't great, but man they got near perfection with some of the other ones. It's a show that gets such a good reputation largely because of people lamenting what it could have been if it was given a full season or two, but admittedly, it could have been dogsh*t. But what they did in so few episodes was simply incredible. I'd be against a reboot or bringing it back tbh, as I don't think you could ever recapture what made it so great.

Mod: Please provide detail on why they are your favourite shows (like Penn!)
This is a discussion forum, after all.
List threads are boring as hell to read. :)

If people keep posting lists without any detail, I'll have to lock this thread.

Something about the show just resonated with me but the finale of S2 broke me. I used to vhs the show off the tv and then binge watch it when the season ended. I wouldn't watch the end of S5 (she died) until I'd taped and could watch S6 It clearly drove me insane.

    Firefly
I so wanted to love this and I did.

    Breaking Bad
Bryan Cranston is fantastic. Such an outlandish tale somehow became believable.

    Sopranos
Made me want to be a gangster. TV shouldn't glamorise crime to susceptible people. Tony was a detestable character but somehow I kept rooting for him.

    West Wing
Brilliant drama. Bit much USA is great in places. There was a charm about Martin Sheen and the democrats that wouldn't work with the republicans. Couldn't watch this when Bush was president. Anytime I do I seem to become more assertive in real life for a few weeks.
