im afraid its a failing water pump.

Cracked reservoir maybe? Maybe the hose?
Is there a good level of coolant left in the system?
Are you using coolant or just plain water in the system?

Hoping it's just a cracked reservoir..
Using coolant mixed with water. I had to top it up recently

Be very careful, letting it overheat could end up ruining the engine. If there's steam coming out of the engine bay, the leak is pretty severe.

Any chance you drove through standing water just before you opened the bonnet? Could be steam coming off the hot engine / exhaust after getting wet? I noticed this a few times with my own car.

Problem was a cracked coolant reservoir. All sorted
