I saw in another thread that there was a pirate from Rathfarnham called Zike FM 30 years ago this month. I did not know it existed at the time.

Does anybody know anything about it - who was involved, etc.?

Hi Declan. It seemed to be a hobby station - also heard on AM a few times in 1988.

Could often receive them around Stillorgan but they didn’t seem to do much live programming. They used some cuts the old Alfasound “Royal County Radio” package (the sound of RCR)

Brian Greene (fairly active on social media channels these days) of pirate.ie was involved and would probably have more info

Run by a school kid called Dave McCarthy (who later went onto Sunset FM for a brief spell) from Ballinteer.

Ah yes - and, if I'm not mistaken, this made up part of what became Brian Greene's Radio Caroline in the same neck of the woods.

Yup. There’s a good item on John Walsh’s Wireless on Flirt blog about the station (I’m a new poster so can’t post it here)

Think they were initially quite serious about running a community service but not sure how long they lasted. DJ Wicked (the original maniac!) may have worked there and it’s where Tracey Lee did her first radio show.

I saw in another thread that there was a pirate called DK FM 30 years ago this month. I did not know it existed at the time, although I did read the name since then.

Does anybody know if anybody else was involved, besides Mr. Davitt Kelly, a pioneer of '70s pirates?

There may have been two brothers, Goggins, from Stillorgan. I know they were involved in DLR FM some time later.

Going through the bandscan for 30 years ago for Dublin on another thread, one of the stations I do remember hearing is Phoenix which came from Blanchardstown.

What I never knew back in 1988 was who was involved? I assume it has a connection to the currently licensed community station for Dublin 15 of almost the same name - Pheonix FM!

Which one - it doesn't really matter! There were no licenses for community radio at the time. Only RTE-owned stations were licensed in Ireland until 1989.

Better known as Wonderland Radio and broadcast from a fairly run down building at the top of the Greenhills Road - Tallaght end.

Primarily an AM station , FM was introduced later but iirc attempts to get a stronger signal from a higher site were hampered by link issues.

Bernard Evans hosted an anorak show on a Friday evening on the station
