The Amazon Echo is advertised as £79.99 (product code is B06Y65CLQY)

If I add only that item to the basket I see the following:
Your order qualifies for FREE Delivery in the UK. Delivery Details
    Select this option at checkout.

    Subtotal (1 item): £79.99

    I click proceed to checkout:
    I click free checkout
I click deliver to my Ireland address
    I click GBP

    The price has gone up:
    Order Summary
    Items: GBP 81.99
    Postage & Packing: GBP 6.00
    Total: GBP 87.99
    Promotion Applied: -GBP 6.00
    Order Total: GBP 81.99

    I click "more details":

    Amazon.co.uk Order Summary
    Items: GBP 66.66
    Postage & Packing: GBP 4.88
    Total before VAT: GBP 71.54
    VAT: GBP 16.45
    Total: GBP 87.99
    Promotion Applied: -GBP 6.00
    Order Total: GBP 81.99

Any idea why the price went up from 79.99 to 81.99?

I talked to customer service... the only option she gave me was cancel order or go with order. After talking for 30min she said she would look into it later on for me. She seemed to think that the VAT was estimated... I explained that I needed to understand more. She just couldn't help me.

I wonder is it an issue with my account only or am I missing something?

Irish VAT is charged at 23%, UK VAT is 20%, initial price you see before confirming is UK.

Technically your making a saving of 39c if my math is correct. Wouldn’t it be 82.38 including 23% vat

    Your math is incorrect. 79.99 / 1.2 * 1.23 = 81.99

Sorry folks, this must have been the first time I've noticed this. I didn't realise everyone else was already clued in.

No, the other poster was right. I can see you added 3% to the 79.99

A few years ago a few companies used to use marketing tricks like "get the 23% VAT back".

Sony had this for TVs, knowing fine well many people would mess up the maths. So many would think a tv for €1000 was going to have 23% off it, and wrongly think they will get 230 back. But the TV had 23% added, the ex VAT was 813, 23% of that is 187, which adds to 1000.

There was a chrome addon thing which would show the price with Irish applied on amazon. This may have fallen down on things with different vat rates in Ireland and the UK.

The VAT you pay to amazon does go to the Irish government by the way.
