    Its an interesting misunderstanding actually.

Rapeseed, the large winter or spring annual oil crop in the Brassica family, is related to mustard, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and turnip.

The word "rape" to describe the cruciferous vegetable in English comes ultimately from Latin via the Romance languages, from rapa ("turnip"). The word "rape" to describe a sexual assault comes from a different Latin root, rapere ("to seize or carry off").

Kinda already happened. In the US it's known and referred to as Canola oil or Oilseed. Rape, not so much.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

There was a case in the UK where a woman demanded rape yellow be removed from paint and DIY stores and renamed .

Up in 'the North' some find colours very offensive.

I once had one of those orange Casio watches, and a work colleague was a bit put out by it. He didn't like the colour.

    Very, very sad.

I have no issue with the username, just thought it mildly amusing that the s/he was so knowledgeable in the subject. I assume the name is some obscure reference to something I haven’t heard.

Edit: not that obscure, it’s an opera based on a Shakespeare poem.

Known as Canola mainly because thats the trademarked name given it by the Canadiann company who developed it in the early sixties.

Im used to rapeseed oil now, so I dont think twice about the word. I do remember hearing about someone in Canada having a sign up which read 'Rape for sale'. Rapeseed is also known as rape.

What I do find strange, is the name 'Circle K'. They have popped up here and there in the last 6 months. I know they have been around North America a long time now. The Greek word for circle is Kluklos, and it is where the KKK's name derives from.

So let’s call it rapaseed oil then

The origin of the word rapeseed comes from the Latin rapum (meaning "turnip"), and so it has nothing whatsoever to do with sexual violation... But I'm sure it will have to be changed regardless to avoid triggering the easily offended.

It’s not a misunderstanding though, is it? I doubt anyone thought the plant was originally named after a sexual crime, even if it’s now called something else in some places now.

Rape is kind of a harsh word, I don’t really have an issue with a name change. Its language roots might be different but it sounds like what it sounds like.

Makes perfect sense considering everything else they want banned or changed ie, Laura Ingalls, Enid Blyton, Mark Twain....

Mum would say. Going out for some ******'s to light the fire.

Funniest I ever remember was Des Bishop saying how funny the Irish are.

Saying im outside to smoke a Fag in New York could be misinterpreted.

He'd probably be barred from the stage for life these days if he said something similar.

I remember the aul fellas saying your wan over there's a quare whore, meaning she's a bit of an odd woman.

He's a qare fella meant he's a bit of a loner or esscentric, or it could mean he's like the divel.
