Planning new calf shed

Hi all. I am currently building a new calf shed. Calves will be started in another shed and then moved up to new shed. It is 4 bays long and 40 foot wide. I was thinking of putting a computerized feeder in the shed. Any ideas on how best to pen it out for auto feeder. I was originally thinking of putting in a centre 10 foot wide passage but not sure.

I have no experience of automatic feeders or how to pen out for them.

But just on the calf housing.
The best ones I've seen are south facing, low roofed with hinged overhangs big enough for 10 calves and sheeted/walled between pens so no shared airspace between pens and the south facing element allows in sunlight when the overhangs are folded up.

I wouldn't be a fan of these high roofed shared airspace cold houses for calves.

Maybe a compromise for your shed might be igloos on the outside of the shed/pens and then all the feeding equipment under cover in the shed.

It still doesn't answer your question though. Ha. :pac:

Looking to do exactly the same here as soon as finances allow

We were planning on running majority of calves together on 3 stations and then have the last one for training etc

People tell us key is to have good run off on the floor by station, maybe even use pig slats

A friend installed four auto feeders a couple of years ago and made the mistake of not using pig slats at the stations even though the ground was sloped away to allow for drainage. He found it very difficult to keep the bedding dry. He solved the problem the following year by installing pig slats.
