    Hi all,

I've recently been offered two positions but I'm in a bit of a conundrum as to which one to choose so I'm looking for advice from those of you who have been in the same position in the past or are familiar with this situation. Much thanks in advance!!

    The companies:
Company A is very world renowned and having their name on my CV would definitely make it stand out, Company B is well known as well but not to the extent of Company A. Company A has mixed reviews on glassdoor and is regarded as one of those companies that works you to the bone for no benefits. Company B on the other hand has very positive reviews and is considered one of the best for work-life balance. Both companies have great progession opportunities and both have the same salary.

    The role:
Both roles are in the same field but Company A's role is more diverse as it entails working on different projects. Company B's role is more repetitive with set daily tasks and working on projects as they arise.

The reason why I'm split between these two is that Company A's role is more challenging and thus sounds more interesting, as well as having the bigger name. On the other hand, I really appreciate the relaxed nature of company B and their progression opportunities not to mention the employees I met seemed really happy and approachable.

    Wage difference?

Go with company B as you can not put a price on work life balance. If the salary is the same it's a no brainer.

How likely are you to move on in the medium term? Company A might be the better name on the CV but if your spending 5-10 years with a company, I'd lean to the one that will treat you better

    How old are you?

    Do you have kids?

Do you have a strict gym routine?

Would be Company B for me.

What industry out of interest? I ask because I work in IT, and I find that some people can over-estimate the value of a big company name on their CV.

I think you overstate the value of this. What gets you interviews and jobs is how you describe your role in any company.

    Wage difference?

    Ok
    States same salary

If you are young, single, and starting out in your career, go for A

If you are older, wiser, or married and a parent, and value your life more than your career go for B

Company B. Every time. What YOU have done and what YOU can do should be what stands out on the CV. Not that you spent x years as a minion in a brand name company imo.

Well done on getting yourself to this position. It genuinely does look like a fairly close race.
Ultimately, I agree with those that speak about better work life balance and therefore company B.

Also, once in the company, if you prove yourself at your specified role but feel you might like more variation, I suspect that you would be able to have a conversation with them with a high chance of success that something could be worked out.

I wouldn't put too much weight behind Glassdoor reviews.
Like a lot of reviews elsewhere, they are often written by disgruntled people with axes to grind. The happy people usually don't bother writing a review so it can be very one sided.

The company I work for have been slated on there, generally by disgruntled ex-employees who didn't get on well for whatever reason.
The reputation was so bad that I actually called the hiring manager to discuss it with him before accepting and after a chat I was content.
Been here years now and love the company so take those reviews with a pinch of salt.

First of all, congrats, it's a nice dilemma, well done on your success.

'...relaxed nature of company B and their progression opportunities not to mention the employees I met seemed really happy and approachable.'

This stood out for me in your OP.
Like a pp, I wouldn't put much weight on reviews on Glassdoor, tbh.

Overall, I think B sounds like a nicer place to work, and you have said there are opportunities for progression.

Best of luck with the decision.

Have you met the team you'd be in and your direct manager? Manager for me has always been the most important of any job in terms of my happiness there and in helping me develop my skills and ongoing career development. The team around you and getting to work with people who you can learn from and grow is always good too. And people who you can get along well with and have as much craic as possible during the day!

I'd go with option B and it wouldn't really be a difficult choice.

Option B is the obvious choice. I am surprised it is even a close call.

Company B every time. You will enjoy your work and life a lot more if the work/life balance is more encouraged. Having a big name on your CV isn't as important as you might think. It's like putting a case on your phone to keep the resell value... who ever actually sells an old phone! :) Once you get into company B and prove yourself there will always be room to move into new roles and departments.

I work in IT for a large global well known company that would be like company B from your example. 80 to 90% of my time is spent working directly with a customer that is like company A from your example. In this case, Company A is a fantastic name to have on your CV, one of the biggest brand names in the world, but having gotten to know the workings of the company (even though they are very nice people that I work with), I wouldn't work for them. They work people really hard... evenings, weekends, night time calls with offshore teams etc. It's like a badge of honour to work 80 hours for some people! I just don't get that mentality. I'm not a fan of their culture, though they do pay really well. Even so, I wouldn't move. I value my own time and family life more than work. These guys sacrifice a lot of family time. It will catch up with them eventually when they burn out.

    Hi All,

Thanks a million to all of you who offered advice :) I went with company B as I felt i fit more into their culture and I already have "brand name" companies on my CV in case the companies I worked for matter more than the experience I got to anyone in the future.

Company A did counter offer but it was BS and honestly more insulting than if they'd just left it so I think I made the right choice.
