A UK passport holder applying for their first Irish passport with a certificate of naturalisation is asked to forward their current passport with their application.

I assume this will be returned as dual citizenship and dual passports wants to be retained by the passport office.

    Is this the case?

    Thanks in advance

Yes of course they will return your British passport to you.

They’re not too hot on details.

Perhaps enclose a letter stating that you need the other passport back as soon as possible.

Ireland has no bars on dual-citizenship. They're only looking for the passport for ID reasons. It will absolutely be returned to you.

    The UK also permits dual-citizenship

The only issues that arise with dual nationality are where your other nationality is a country that does not permit dual-nationality e.g. China. In that case, it's entirely up to you whether or not you inform them and if they do find out, they will typically cancel your passport, but it's absolutely nothing to do with the Irish Government or passport service.

There are a few EU countries that don't allow it: the Netherlands, Austria and Germany technically requires permission, but again all of that is an issue with those governments, not ours.

I've heard a few horror stories from Chinese people who've accidentally informed the Chinese embassy without realising that dual-citizenship wasn't permitted e.g. by giving them a UK or Irish passport as part of an ID process, only to discover their Chinese passport and citizenship was abruptly cancelled.

Done it myself. It'll be automatically sent back in two to three weeks' time.
