So the OH is a sheep farmer. For Christmas I want to get him a headlight for when lambing starts but lately I've seen hats with lights and think it would be ideal for the cold middle of the night maternity shift! Can anyone recommend if the hat and light would do the job or would I be better getting a headlight and if so which one? Thanks

Get a decent headlight, any of the caps I've seen are pure gimmicks.

Cheetah headlight is the job, 50 quid in the coop. Rechargeable and comes with car charger as well as standard plug.

I’d be spending a fair few quid on a head lamp. I have a “LedLensor” brand. My bro in law gave it to me and it’s a great job. It works off 4 x AAA batteries. When it goes, I’ll be replacing it with a rechargeable model which is about €80.

Those led hats are only around €10-€15 and the light off them reflects that.

Have a Ledlenser myself. Great job, rechargeable battery lasts for ages if you generally use the low power option. High power is only really needed for scanning dark fields. You can also throw in some AAA batteries if you are stuck.

    +1 on the led lenser.

Dog ate wires on first one but I bought exactly the same model and use the original one to charge the battery pack I’m not using !!

Which led lenser are people using.
I got 2 seo7r headlamps great torch compact and rechargeable but both have broke where the tape wire goes between the battery and led part.

Even though they broke I'd be tempted to get another on , but if there's a better model....

    H14 R 2 here
    https://www.handyhardware.ie/product/53453/LED-Lenser-H14R.2-3-In-1-Head-Torch-Blister
Powerful but a wee bit heavy. Zoom makes it great for anything from close up right through to searching the ditches far away.
The only thing I don't like about it is that when the battery runs down, it will shut down with very little warning, leaving you three fields away in the dark

Yes, that's the main gripe I have with the ledlenser. Otherwise all fine.

The light fades away but you’d have 20 minutes of a low light to get u out of the bog.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Muckit

Mine blinks when battery is about to go, then u get about 10min of dim light. But really if you put on charge every evening it's not an issue. I only got caught out once when hadnt charged it in a few nights.

I like also that they are 'normal size' batteries (are they AAA?) that can be easily replaced when they do go. Also that they have fairly universal charger port that some phone leads will fit.

Overall a great product. Couldn't be without one now. I've dosed cattle and done other tricky jobs this time of year at night that I'd have had to put off until weekends otherwise. No matter what yard lights you have you'll still have shadows cast and dark spots. Head torch shines right where you are looking. Has well paid for itself in convenience and purely from H&S point of view at this stage.

When l think back to the hand torches my father had with the big Ever Ready batteries..... !!!! The weight of them, the **** light and not having the use of your two hands!

Probably a bit late for this year but another present suggestion l could recommend.
A YETI travel mug. 20oz is plenty big. Will keep tea/coffee hot for over 6hrs. Unbelievable. You'd scald yourself if not used to one as they stone cold on outside. Those plastic mugs are a pure waste.
